This is on the front bumper of my '78 FJ40. I don't know if it's original, but it looks like it. Doesn't have the curve at the end like yours does.

Generally I think you are correct. Some owners do want to keep their Cruiser as original as possible. In this case I think the connector is actually useful if you ever want to take the top off. Not something I think I'll ever do, but maybe the next owner will.

Is the retainer tab between the plastic case and the flat part of the brass, or between the plastic case and the curled part of the brass?

My FSM is copyright 1980, and the wiring diagram for FJ40 USA & Canada says "1979 Model" on it. In the back it says "12th Printing: July, 1980" with publication number 98154.

I think that's an M8-1.25 partially threaded flange bolt. Check out McMaster-Carr . You'll have to figure out the length.

How did it turn out? I'm looking for carpeting for my '78.
