I've been looking at this thread with great interest as my current starter doesn't work well in the cold - fails to fully engage. Anyway I picked up a GR starter and am preparing for the install. The discussion and wiring details have been very helpful. But I am having a difficult time...
After further investigation I think the nut for the version that goes at the top of the windshield window is M14-1.00 and difficult to find based on my limited effort.

By the way a friend said he uses thin nylon washers between painted panels when he has done restoration (not FJ's). Will you be doing something like this? Also...
Years ago I had a new '78 and as I remember (who can forget their first love) it did not have gaskets (but I never took it apart) - However after taking apart the rack on my new to me '78 it seems that perhaps not when new but gaskets would probably be a good idea upon re-assembly.
