So one day i was sitting around reflecting.... :smokin:

Came up with this wild ass idea.
I have been sitting on the t100 axle since forever.
I had intended on using it but the locker options for the 8.4 are basically lunchbox or arb.
My budget will not allow arb stuff.
My off roader wont allow lunchbox lockers.
so i had a bit if dilemma. Want width dont want to change diffs yet.

So in my parts pile i had another empty housing from a 2nd gen 4runner with the brackets sorta plazd off.

So i decided to "hybrid" an axle. Thus my title. I would love a Diamond but my budget will not allow. So i will save for a front housing. This rear housing should be plenty burly when im done.

After like four hours on the end of my 4.5" i am ready to move forward.

Made it to the last cut before i ran out of zip wheels.
So i have six inches of cutting then time for fitting etc.
Tommorow i will get more wheels and flappers.

axle will be right around 65.25" WMS to WMS

I need a bigger press....or a bigger body :flipoff2:

So have you ever done a mini truck rear axle bearing without a press and jig?
This went something like that.
Dropped the housing repeatedly with a diff installed for weight.
I think im really stupid.

I need to make a jig type device to verity flange to flange measurements before welding and such.
Im basically planning on tacking it up then reinstalling the axles and a dummy diff as sort of a jig for final welding.

Ok, trying to wrap my head around this... You are using the 8" center and the innermost part of the tubes, then you are splicing on the T100 outer axle tubes for width? What axles are you using that are a bolt in for length? I would guess you'd be using the T100 shafts but that they'd be too long and possibly to big of diameter to go into the 8" 3rd member. I need the "Idiot's Guide to the Mind of Gnob" please. ;)

yes, i guess.
this is the cheapest, maybe not easiest way to gain width.
and what you see is whats happending.
the axle shafts are still just 30 spline like mini truck stuff. the bearing is the same, the shafts have a larger major OD than the mini stuff.

essentially this is the t100 axle with the 8" mini center section.

i guess i could post a pic of shaft comparo later.

and are you sure you arent looking for "the guide to idiot gnobs mind" ? lol

and quit trying to warp your head around it, just enjoy the pics :flipoff2:

Oh, gotcha. I thought you were narrowing it to somewhere in between the 4runner width and the t100 width. Didn't realize you were going straight T100 width with 8" 3rd.
Did you look at possibly adapting the 3rd member flange of the 8" to the 8.4 instead of splicing the tubes? I guess you would've had to cut out the back to make sure everything lined up before welding in a new flange ring but I was just curious. Then again you would've lost some ground clearance with the 8.4 pumpkin area but that could've been shaved....I dunno, sounds like probably the same amount of work either way.
Neat project, its nice to see it staying Toyota and getting close to full width size. Now you just need to make one for a front diff. Cut the outers off the 85 front, weld on the knuckles to a T100 rear and get some custom length chromoly inners made...and if you offset the diff to utilize one of the stock length axles you would really only need one custom inner made...hmmmm. All Toyota full-width, I LIKE!

Damn!
Looks like diamond from here, guess I don't have a future as a jeweler.

I am figuring out what to do about a through bar type jig thingy.

That and toying with starting over and using the 9.5 fzj chunk.
