Wonder if anyone knows of any good roads especially ones that have some interesting history tied to them. Forest Roads, Dirt Roads, that type of road.
We just rode the Skyway Motorway north from Sylacauga and really enjoyed the great views ,the old Ranger station and fire tower at Horn Mountain.

LOL, I was gonna say Skyway! umm... The Conecuh Forest in the south is decently sized... as far as historic... not sure about any historic dirt roads...

Parts of the this road are in the Talledega national forest. McIntosh Road
I know some people that are currently trying to map as much of the road as they can.

Edit:
Also here McIntosh Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I know we talked about a ride like this at the last meeting, but I would like to put a ride like this together before the end of the year. Skyway would be an obvious choice since it wouldn't require any scouting.

I'd be down for a December ride like this, I wonder if the 2WD tundra can do the skyway... I think mini vans do it right?

If a 2WD truck CAN'T do it and there are not going to be any Minivans up there I'm in. We drove right up there on the way to DEGA and it only took us about 3.5 hours.

I've had a lot of training in my days in Land Navigation. Both as a ground guy and from a helicopter. All I can say is that if Union Troops used that back in the day they put me to shame. That you guys know where it is at all is a testament to word of mouth stories from our grandfathers :)

Sounds like fun.

I'm fairly confident I could manuever C.Charlie over a level 2 trail, it's got the Limited Slip Dif (LSD) and actually used it this weekend parking up a hill at tailgate.
I once got the Scion across a very bad rutted mud hole, down your way, actually more towards Elba.

You probably could do it in a 2wd truck, actually think ground clearance would be more of a problem then traction. If I remember right its about a 17 mile ride from the entrance @ hwy 148 to the end of the first leg @ hwy 77. That doesn't include a detour up horn mountain which might be more than a 2wd could do if its wet. You will get "pinstripes" on whatever you drive there. Also after you get to hwy 77 turn left go 5 miles and eat at the Old MILL Restaurant.

Old Mill rocks. I THINK I have done the Horn Mountain trail when I lived in Talladega. Does it have a big place where you can look out from on it? And the road coming off of 77 is a steep gravel road?

Just looked at the map and pretty sure were talking about the same place. I did it back in the day with a 2wd Grand Cherokee. If I remember, the 148 side is the worst.

Yep 148 side is roughest and it just slowly keeps improving from there.

Last time I was on Skyway the Game Warden was in a Caprice Classic.

does anyone know of some good LEGAL trails close to montgomery?

I'd say the motorway in the Talledega forest is near, and will be about as near as you can get. The GAP is closest as far as obstacles. It has to be public lands to be legal, unless theirs prior consent by owner. I know of no place like that near Montgomery.

Water sheds in Sylacauga is fun, but not compleetly legal !! And yeah I did skyway In several differan vehicles! I lived up there for a while
