Has anyone here done this? There is not much info in the FSM about the way to do it. The tranny side is easy to understand, my problem is with the dash end, I tried to reach under the dash to release the cable and its a no go. I started to take the dash apart as per the FSM and it stated that the steering wheel should come off. I tried to see if I could reach it removing some of the lower dash trim pieces, I had to reassembled due to lack of time. How much of the dash trimmings need to come off to get to the back of the speedo? I've tried the search in the 60's group (same type cable set up as the 91-92) and here and had not found a specific answer to my problem.

Thanks in advance, Cliff

I was hoping somebody would have replied to this as I need to remove my speedo cable too to lube it. I haven't pulled mine out yet but have done heaps on other cars. The Toyota speedo cables are usually a PITA to access. Can you actually touch the speedo cable? If you can touch it you will need to perservere it will come eventually. The trick is to fully release the clip that holds it onto the back of the speedo before you try and pull it off. If you can't touch the cable without being double jointed you will have to remove the speedo itself. I can't help you with the specifics as I haven't had the need to remove mine yet.

Mickldo, yes I can contort and actually touch the clip but I could not get any leverage to press and release it, hope someone chimes in with a tip on how to make this easier than a hole dash disassembly afternoon.

Thanks

I just pulled off the black trim and then pulled the speedo cluster forward slightly and reach behind and unclipped it. It wasn't that bad. I bet disassembly and reassembly was maybe an hour and a half. You can tilt it to get it around the steering wheel.

Finally tackled this issue this weekend. Had to reference the Chilton manual to get the proper tip for installation. Removed the panel under the steering wheel and the black trim panels as genericfj80 suggested and his instructions about the tilt and pull worked great. As for installation start from the inside of the cab and feed through the hole on transmission hump and feed through till the grommet attachment and secure the grommet to body. Attach cable to hooks on the underside then to tranny case. Back to the cab side, feed the cable through the back of the dash and attach to back of speedo gauge, it will clip into place when square ended cable is aligned properly to gauge, allow approx. 2hr. No more chirping "birds" in the dash or bouncing needle. Next task is to find out how to fix the dash lights and gear lights at the shifter that don't work now.

Yeah, that's what I did also.

The end of the cable (cluster side) is snapped into place on the cluster, only one way.

The rubber grommet that plugs into the body was a little tricky, but nothing a dull flat tip screwdriver can't fix.

Good luck,

Had to do this also...have to pull out the cluster like everyone said. Or find the guy in GA that did mine for $45 bucks. Not a nice job if your rear main seal was leaking.

Also if the cable is bad for too long it will damage the little gears in the speedo itself and you'll have noise left over.
