Front axle rebuild - OEM P/Ns here

So, I'm at 75K of everyday driving on my '94, and am ready for front axle maintenance --

-- I decided to stay Toyota-faithful with the parts, and called the parts dept. yesterday for suggested replacement parts and their P/Ns -- the guy was clueless, telling me to come in and point out from a diagram what I needed --

-- now if I were Beo. or Dan, this would be no problem -- but I'm not -- could you help a bit here, Dan, on what parts and their P/Ns you'd suggest??

The Birf Party for GCLC looks like it's gonna be May 18th -- real nice people there --

THANKS!!

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Okay, so my favorite dealer, way out in Bellevue, Wash., helped me figure out the main parts I need -- here they are, and they give a 20% discount off these prices --

-- anyone, please, chime in if there's a disagreement on this --

Master Gasket Kit, both sides, $201.03 (P/N 04434-60051)

Inner tube seals, x2, $6.26 ea. (P/N 90310-35010)

Trunnion bearings (top and bottom), x4, $22.38 ea. (P/N 90366-20003)

Inner wheel bearings, x2, $50.90 ea. (P/N 90368-49084-77)

Outer wheel bearings, x2, $43.85 ea. (P/N 90368-45087-77)

Grease seals for wheel, x2, $14.99 ea (P/N 90-311-62-001)

whew!

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Eric,

As I said before, I would not replace the wheel bearings at 70k miles. With proper maintenance they should last 300k miles or more. Inspect, but don't replace. If there is rust, flat spots, dents from dropping on the concrete floor, etc., then replace. Otherwise repack and reuse.

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Eric,

*I'm closing monthend and have not had time to sit down.

*it's 90311-62001, book list is $12.02

*Also maybe 90215-42025 tab washer x2
*You can piece what's in the 04434-60051 kit and it's actually cheaper. You may or may not need different shims to setup the trunion pre-load. I did not last time.

The 04434-60051 consists of 2 of each of the following numbers:

90313-93003 $27.22 ea
43436-60011 $1.14 *ea
43435-60020 $1.03 ea
43204-60031 $27.35 ea
43422-60060 $1.51 ea

*Total $116.50 versus $201.03 for the kit, same stuff.

*Dan

C-Dan,
I know you are busy but, if you get a chance, please post the p/n and list price for the 54mm hub socket SST. I'm working on an "OEM Knuckle Kit" list that I will post in this thread. I wanted to duplicate the JT Outfitters kit with optional pieces like the hub socket.

Beo,
That would be a 09607-60020-01

As it is a tool, it does not have a published sale price.

I sell them for $32.95

Eric,

Tools come from OTC SPC. The service manager at your dealer will know how to get them, maybe the parts manager.
Often dealers do not sell tools.

Cheers, Dan

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Eric,

Did my birfs this last weekend. Couple of suggestions:

1. If you are worried you might need wheel bearings, I got mine through Auto Zone. I got the EXACT same four Timken wheel bearings and races that were OEM in my '95 for $63. Turns out I only needed the PS outer, so I took the rest back. If you think you might need them, $63 is cheap insurance to have them in your hand if you do. If you don't, it's easy to take them back.

2. I'd get at least one extra oil seal (I think you have them listed at tube seals).... just in case. This hit me when I was carefully tapping the first new seal in and wondered what would happen if I f'd it up as I glanced at the pieces of my daily driver spread across the garage floor. For $6, an extra seal would have made me a little happier. Once again, cheap insurance.

3. If you've read the birf write-ups on the web (Norm's, Jim's, George's, Morgan's, etc...) the job is pretty straight forward. I equated reading and re-reading these to the old basketball philosophy of always dreaming about perfect jump shots when you are not on the court to put you in the right state of mind when you are. If you are like me, however, most of your dreams will eventually involve naked women, which really have nothing (or is it everything?) to do with birfields. Once this happens, it's time to go to work.

Hey that would make the best knuckle rebuild article yet. Get a cute young girl to change out a set of birfs in the buff. Get some photos, lots of photos, and put together an article that would be both fun to read and informative!

I am thinking clean up would be fun too.

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Beowulf's recommended parts for an 80 Series front axle service:
================================================

This is divided into 3 sections; A, B, and C.
Pricing is approximate and was determined by using list prices as of May, 2003.

Section A. Typical Anal Mainteance 'Mudder (Money is not an obstacle)
This is for those of us that want to do the job
one time and want all possible parts on hand. Cost
of parts is insignificant.

90313-93003 $27.22 ea x2 Dust Seal
43436-60011 $ 1.14 ea x2 Inner Spindle Gasket
43435-60020 $ 1.03 ea x2 Outer Spindle Gasket
43204-60031 $27.35 ea x2 Dust Seal & wiper Kit
43422-60060 $ 1.51 ea x2 Hub Gasket

90311-62001 $12.02 ea x2 Grease seals for wheel
90310-35010 $ 6.26 ea x2 Inner axle oil seals
09607-60020-01 $32.95 ea x1 54mm hub socket, SST
90366-20003 $22.38 ea x4 Knuckle Bearings & races (Koyo: 30304AJR-2-N Hi cap)
90368-49084-77 $50.90 ea x2 Inner wheel bearings, Timken bearing #JLM104948, race #JLM104910
90368-45087-77 $43.85 ea x2 Outer wheel bearings, Timken bearing #LM102949 , race #LM102910
90215-42025 $ 2.81 ea x2 Tabbed Spindle Lock Washer

43236-60020 $ 1.39 ea x2 0.10mm Knuckle bearing shims for setting preload
43233-60030 $ 2.73 ea x2 0.20mm Knuckle bearing shims for setting preload
43234-60020 $ 3.01 ea x2 0.50mm Knuckle bearing shims for setting preload
43235-60020 $ 4.06 ea x2 1.00mm Knuckle bearing shims for setting preload

90521-34005 $ 2.69 ea x2 C-clip for inner axle to birfield (43411C in the diagram below)
90520-31007 $ 2.57 ea x2 Snap ring for outer axle
90126-12005 $ 1.57 ea x8 New style lower knuckle studs (added 13.May.2005)

Section A assumes you will be replacing wheel bearings and
adjusting the knuckle bearing preload. The inner axle will be
separated from the birfield for cleaning so you will need the
C-clip. The birfields will be swapped from left to right side to
extend their life. A hub socket is in the list of parts because
this is intended to be for the person that wants a complete kit.

================================================== ================

Section B. Do the job right.
This is for those of us that insist on using the
best parts available. This is the first or the second
service for your vehicle. Many parts will be cleaned
and reused.

90313-93003 $27.22 ea x2 Dust Seal
43436-60011 $ 1.14 ea x2 Inner Spindle Gasket
43435-60020 $ 1.03 ea x2 Outer Spindle Gasket
43204-60031 $27.35 ea x2 Dust Seal & wiper Kit
43422-60060 $ 1.51 ea x2 Hub Gasket
90215-42025 $ 2.81 ea x2 Tabbed Spindle Lock Washer
90520-31007 $ 2.57 ea x2 Snap ring for outer axle

90311-62001 $12.02 ea x2 Grease seals for wheel
90310-35010 $ 6.26 ea x2 Inner axle oil seals
90366-20003 $22.38 ea x4 Knuckle Bearings & races (Koyo: 30304AJR-2-N Hi cap)
90126-12005 $ 1.57 ea x8 New style lower knuckle studs (added 13.May.2005)

Section B assumes you will inspect and reuse the wheel bearings, and many other parts.
The inner axle will not be seperated from the birfield for thorough cleaning or for
swapping the birfields from left to right sides. You will borrow a hub socket if you
don't have one. The knuckle bearing preload will not be adjusted and the shims will be reused.

================================================== ================

Section C. Do the job at minimum cost.
This is for those of us that need to save every possible penny
and will risk a premature failure to conserve money. This may
be the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th axle service for your vehicle.
Most parts will be cleaned and reused.

90313-93003 $27.22 ea x2 Dust Seal
43436-60011 $ 1.14 ea x2 Inner Spindle Gasket
43435-60020 $ 1.03 ea x2 Outer Spindle Gasket
43204-60031 $27.35 ea x2 Dust Seal & wiper Kit
43422-60060 $ 1.51 ea x2 Hub Gasket

90310-35010 $ 6.26 ea x2 Inner axle oil seals

Section C assumes you will inspect and reuse the knuckle bearings,
and many other parts. The inner axle will not be seperated from the birfield
for thorough cleaning or for swapping the birfields from left to right sides.
You will borrow a hub socket if you don't have one. You may elect to reuse or
make your own 60011, 60060, & 60020 gaskets. The inner wheel bearings will not be
removed or inspected.

================================================== ================

There is a kit from Toyota that contains the seals and gaskets for both sides.
This kit is priced higher than the individual pieces. Therefore, the above
lists contain the individual parts rather than the kit.

04434-60051 $201.03 ea x1 Master Front Axle Gasket Kit, both sides

The 04434-60051 consists of the following part numbers:
90313-93003 $27.22 ea x2 Dust Seal
43436-60011 $ 1.14 ea x2 Inner Spindle Gasket
43435-60020 $ 1.03 ea x2 Outer Spindle Gasket
43204-60031 $27.35 ea x2 Dust Seal & wiper Kit
43422-60060 $ 1.51 ea x2 Hub Gasket

Total $116.50 versus $201.03 for the kit, same stuff.

================================================== ==================

The bearing manufacturer part numbers were listed where available. These
can be sourced from many places, including your Toyota dealer. Get the
best price you can as long as it is the same part.

================================================== =================

Nice job -B-

Gumby, would it be possible to put B's contribution into the Technical Links section? Somehow it's always easier to reference rather than have to look back through the numerous
posts on this subject.

Cheers, Jim

BTW, at last I think I have an opportunity to use this smiley: :-*.... Thinking of the Birfield pinup.. :-*

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

This is GREAT stuff, B!!

BTW, the 54mm socket can be ordered online through OTC at cartools.com --

-- they're at 800-432-6418 and the 54MM is P/N 1950M, which needs a 3/4" tool, the flex-handle is P/N 6433

THANKS AGAIN, B!!

Re: Front axle rebuild - P/Ns needed (C-Dan)

Whatever you do, don't buy the hub socket from SOR. Theirs is made from metal about the same thickness they use to wrap chewing gum. After a couple of uses my SOR hub socket was almost round. You could always make one yourself...

Eric,
Thanks for the p/n. Post was edited. *Any other details for completeness will be appreciated. I sent C-Dan a PM for prices and part numbers but he's off playing in Moab while I continue to pad my post count with one-liners.
