Hello All,

I come seeking advice.

I currently drive a 2011 4Runner Trail Edition. The only changes to stock are Weathertech floor liners, Shrockworks sliders, and BFG All Terrain tires. I bought it new in February 2012 and have since put on 9,000 miles. I've enjoyed it very much. I like how it drives (although it's low on power) and how nimble it is on trails. I recently purchased a Jayco Baja pop-up trailer and the 4Runner has had no issues towing, other than a little bit of gear hunting on steep inclines in the Sierras.



On our most recent trip however, we ran into a little problem in the shape of our 5 year-old son who took great pains to annoy his sisters (3 and 7) on long, boring stretches of highway. :bang: It made us start to wonder about the lacking 3rd row. I have since test driven a 2011 Land Cruiser at our local stealership. It has 14,200 miles on it and was used by the dealership owner as a "demo" for the past two years. They are selling it as new but certified (?) with a warranty to 100,000 miles. They're asking $65K and change. I think I can talk them down to about $62K based on the conversation with the salesman.

My concerns:

1. Fuel economy. I am currently getting 15 mpg average with 95% city driving. The LC showed 14.3 mpg since last fill up on the computer, which wouldn't be bad IF that's city driving.

2. Offroadability. The LC felt luxurious/solid/powerful but heavy. I'm wondering if with another $5-7 K in suspension, skids, etc. I'd have a more capable trail Bruiser in the 4Runner. I'd have to invest at least that much into the LC just to get it up to snuff (it's very mall-cruiserish right now).

3. That 3rd row would be awesome for the next 5 years or so, but man, it's tight back there!

4. Anything else I should be considering?

that 14.3 has to be almost all city miles would be my guess, I drive a bit heavy on the pedal and average between 16 and 17 mpg, with proly a 70 hwy and 30 city unloaded...

I think unless your getting into really tight trails the LC 200 is every bit as capable as the 4Runner trail edition, the only thing the 4Runner offers is a rear locker and a bit better angle of approach and departure...

don't let that "mall Cruiser" look trick you, the 200 series is very capable offroad, I"ve yet to get mine stuck and it has gone through some stuff that people thought it couldn't, I threw some bigger tires on mine and it gets me anywhere I want to go!!!

the third row is a bit tight, the second row does slide forward a bit, so you can "share" the leg room between the 2nd and 3rd row a bit depending on who is sitting where, which my cause more fights between the kids:)

That looks great!

Are there big differences between the 2011 and the 2013 models? I noticed when sitting in a 2013 that it has 5 speeds for crawl control vs 3 in the 2013. I also noticed that the 2013 have some LED stuff going on, and that they appear to have 360 degree cameras. My salesman didn't even seem to know that, so is there something else I'm missing?
 
Also, I'm surprised by the sliding 2nd row. We couldn't move the seats forward and thought that was a bummer. Are you sure the 2011 2nd row seats slide forward?
 
I had an overly built '08 cruiser, moved to a big city and sold it for a trail edition 4 runner. I overly built the 4 runner and had some fun...but always missed the Landcruiser though, could've been the 5.7. The 4 runner was tight inside when loaded with travel gear, wife, 2 kids, dog, food and luggage. This was even with a roof box too. The fortunate thing was that it wasn't every day that I was loading it like that. Everyone on here flamed me for getting rid of the cruiser to replace with the 4 runner. They all said I would be back.

Fast forward 1 more kid and sure enough, there was no way of doing the 4 runner. I am now into a '09 cruiser which is a slow work in progress. I do not regret anything, but will never go back.

As far as some of your concerns, I did hwy yesterday from Toronto to Pittsburgh, averaging 70 miles and getting 15.3MPG. I have OME lift with 285/75/18 on +12 offset 9.5" rims. This was actually good in my opinion. I average 12ish mixed and 11ish city. My cruiser is driven like a YT 1300 Cornelian Lightfreighter everyday being chased by imperial guards, so I am not a good judge of fuel mileage.
Years ago with my old cruiser, I once fitted 8 adults (for a short trip) with the largest (at 6'4" and 300+ lbs) in the third row. He said it was tight, but did have enough room. It is a pain to get back there, but a child under 12 should have plenty of room.
Offroad...can't touch this thing out of the box. Like others said, it is a bit bigger, but for some reason it always fits. I live in heavily wooded areas up here in Canada and have always been able to meander through and around the trails.
Build quality seemed to be better on the cruiser in my opinion...especially what you don't see. Reliability, not so sure, I didn't have the 4 runner long enough and have bad varying experiences with the two cruisers.

I would do the move and pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

not sure on the 2008 through 2011 on the sliding rear seats, I know my 2013 does, and it comes in handy at times, I belive it slides 4 inches...

one advantage that the LC 200 has over the 4runner that helps it seem small in tight spots is the "offroad turn assist" basically locks up the inner rear wheel on tight turns allowing the truck to "pivot" a bit, actually works pretty good from my experiences so far!!!

I"ve never owned the earlier years of the 200 so I'm not an expert on the differences, but I know a couple of them... The dash is reworked a bit, it's got selectable terrains for offroad, a couple more speeds for Crawl, new front headlights, reworked front bumper, fenders are slightly more bulged out(front and rear) everthing is standard, I believe the "offroad turn assist" is new for 13... I'm sure I"m missing a couple things...
 
4 inches might buy an extra year or two. I'll have to look again. Thanks!
 
You posted this question in the 200 section...what do you expect your answer to be?

Post this same question on a 4runner site and you will get the exact opposite response.

I assumed it was a given the responses would be biased, but hoped to gain some insight anyways. I disagree about your second point. I would wager more than one regular on T4R.org would say go for the LC if you can swing it.
