Debating aside, there is a serious problem with the heads installed in the Prados, to the extent that some retailers will no longer carry them at all. Too bad because otherwise they are pretty nice. But to minimize this problem is to miseducate potential buyers.
 
they have the basic same design as the HDJ81, same size front centre diff, same basic coil suspension, same strength of auto tranny and t/case. 4.90 diffs grears instead of 4.11. disc front and rear, actuall 2WD instaead of the parts wearing full time system...
the only REAL issue with the LJ series is the heads, the bottom ends are plenty strong, you can modify the engine to move the Prodo down the road easy enough. they are WICKED off road.
this person is misinformed to say the least.

i still do not recommend ANYONE buy one but that has nothing to do with the capiblility of the units. i would have no problem putting them up against any other 4X out there as long as it is not on the longivity of the heads...

just my unbiased opinion...
 
people say what they like. I hammer on my brown one. it is very capable with open diffs and besides sometimes dragging the skidplate i keep up with the high riders . it still has not caused me any grief yet even after being stollen. with a tranny cooler for the auto that machine is indestructable. my 74 is in a thousand pieces i will have to post the build project soon. I LOVE MY 78 and bought another real cheap put the 2nd gen. head for TRISH to keep her away from wrecking the 74.
