Hi all-

It’s been ages but happy to see this place is still alive. I picked up a 92 and the 3FE does not enjoy no movement in the South Florida summer so far. Once traffic hits or I get stuck at a drawbridge, the needle starts to climb. Once I start moving again, all is well. Car is fine when it’s not scorching outside or out of direct sunlight parked for long periods of time. Has to be mega hot conditions

What’s been replaced/as it sits:
CSF radiator
Thermostat stuck to open
Clutch fan roaring
Lower hose replaced
Bled system on an incline

I’ve been told “ as long as it’s not in the red you’re fine” by a couple shops but I’m not buying that. Please help me find a way to get this truck right.

Get an infrared heat gun and shut off the engine when taking temp readings. Moving air screws up IR temp readings.

Anyway, when it's showing that it's too hot on the factory gauge, pull over and quickly shut off the engine, take readings on the top and bottom of the radiator, the hoses, the head, the block, etc. Write them down. Do this a few times. You might also consider installing a mechanical (Bourdon tube) temperature gauge in the head, if you really want to know what the temps are. Factory gauges are crap, pretty much across the board.

Since your issue is in slow-moving traffic, are you sure you have the correct fan and fan clutch, and shroud? My 3FE FJ62 reads hotter than I'd like (interestingly on the highway), but the actual engine temps are not out of range. CSF radiators have been blamed for slightly hotter running temps in the FJ60/2 world, too.

You may never get a 'middle of the factory temp gauge' reading, but you owe it to yourself to find out what the actual temps are.

Weak/improper fan clutch. Should be an Aisin FCT-049 with an aqua/green hub. There are many many threads regarding adding thicker silicone oil and adjusting port opening temperature for better cooling. There are other items that MUST be in place for proper cooling.

fan clutch, get a Aisin green hub, drain the fluid and add 20k in it.
FWIW, CSF radiator runs about 10 degree hotter compared to my all alum. unit, so take that into consideration.
