I have the Yaseu Ft 2900R radio of which I bought just for 4wd stuff and I've only used it just a few times to check it out, maybe and hour or two at most.

Basically it sits in the truck turned off for extended periods of time.

THe other day I drove the 60 around town a little bit and was pulling back in the drive way and I heard this rapid popping beeping noise... I then saw the faceplate of the radio (backlight blinking) and it was the radio makeing what I call a rapid beeping noise.

I tired to turn the radio off as I thought maybe it go turned on by accident....I could neither turn it on or off. So I unplugged the power connector.

Today I want back out and check the batteries (Both are good) then I check the output...12.+ engine off, 13+ engine running, and then I checked the power lead which feeds the radiao...with similar voltage readings? I plugged up the radio again to power and I get the same thing...no power on and rapid beeping noise.

Anyone had this happen before...I'm not sure if the radio is still in warranty or not...local ham store is in Huntsville, I may drop it off there to see what they say (Gigaparts).

Given the price of the radio I'm not spending much to fix it, but it is an unusal issue or appears so to me...Anyone?

If you can't wait till Monday to call Yaesu, try the master reset sequence. You can find it in the manual or online. You'll lose all your settings and stored memory....

I'll look into it after tomorrow...to much happening at work tomorrow or I would run it by the store I bought it from .. I'll see what happens later in the week. I'm not much of a "Ham"....there may only be one or two stored frequencies / settings stored so it will not be a big deal to reset it but it would be good to know what the problem is.

Did you use computer software like RT Systems to program your radio (doesn't sound like it from your description)? I had a download get corrupted one time and the radio did wierd things. I would try a hard reset like previously mentioned.

No...i've not used the radio much at all and it has no programming or settings. I probally need to get the pc software but I've not not done anything on that...

I'll try the hard reset and see what happens.

I don't think it is possible to program that radio. It has memory, but they need to be filled manually.

I have had the same radio for a year myself and like yours, it sits in the truck and only gets turned on once or twice a month or so.

It's never done that though.

Umm, based on the manual I'm thinking you're incorrect. Certainly, http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ has the ft2900 in the list of supported radios that his software works with. I highly recommend his software and use it on several of my Yaesu rigs.

cheers,
george.

How do you program it?

What port on the radio do you use to download settings from a computer?

What connection cable would you use? Where would you get it?

I just looked at your link.

It certainly looks like the FT2900 is programable. Very good news for me, as I was under the impression that they could not be programmed.

Yes, via the mic jack. If you read the manual you'll see that the cloning connection for two ft2900 uses the mic jack. Very common on Yaesu rigs that don't have a dedicated data/interface port (such as my FT-857D).

You can make your own cables or there's usually a bunch available on Ebay. I use a USB dongle bought on Ebay and then various adapters I've made for my various rigs. Just go to Ebay and search for "yaesu programming" and choose the appropriate adapter.

cheers,
george.

Just an FYI; The Yeasu programing software brings teh suckage, get a third party program.

well I finally got off my @$$ and installed a new antenna for the above mentioned radio (the last one fell victim to a low hanging tree branch. I plugged up the power to the radio and its working as of now (no other changes). We are going on a ride this coming weekend and we'll see what happens then in regard to issues.

Yeah I thought about getting some programming software....seems like RT Systems and a guy in UK are the major aftermarket players from what I can gather off of eham.net I'll probally get the software from the guy referenced in post #9 above..
