Are you talking about the inner fender or the outer fender and the upper portion? As far as the outside goes, the two fender pieces are spot welded together I believe and then are are ten or so bolts underneath the fenderwell that hold the fender to the inner fender. Those are in addition to the ones at the top.

Ok, those two outer pieces are held together with spot welds I believe. Both of mine were that way anyway. The bolts underneath start at the front with 3 of them holding on the valence and then they work back and there are 2 or so bolts holding the fender onto the a pillar as well. Those ones are located underneath the fender and against the a pillar close to where the top door hinge is. I'll try and find pics of what it looks like. I think eventhough's thread had some good ones. Oh ya, I'm speaking from my experience with my 74

That is what I was afraid of. UGH! So much for an easy fix to the rear of the upper fender:bang:

you can pry the lip up a touch to find where the spotwelds all are, then wack em with a chisel to break them, but there are a lot. way more than i think there should be.

i have just got my outter fenders #2 and 3 on your list back from the mediablasters. ill snap a pic and try post it in the morning when i get home. i was hopping that they werent spot welded together cos im planning to fix some rust in there....

The really fun part of removing my fenders was that 90% of those little bolts snapped off due to rust, and now the fun of trying to get it back together when they are fixed! PITA!

The Upper and lower fenders on my 1969 FJ55 were also spot welded.

Quite a few of the bolts were rusted and snapped during removal (50%:bang:) so I became adept at drilling out the broken studs and re-tapping the welded on bolts (not sure what they are called). I can not stress how important is to buy high quality drill bits and easy outs to remove broken bolt studs. I used a grinder to grind off the portions of the bolt that extended past the welded on nut. I did this so I only had to remove the portion that was stuck in the welded on nut. Grinding the broken bolt shafts also tended to heat them up and this also helped to loosen the rusted bolt shaft.

I the drilled out the spot welds to separate the upper and lower fenders. I stripped the old paint, coated both in POR-15, repainted and used clear silicone to reassemble the top and lower fenders. I use stainless bolts to put it all back together. This all takes a great deal of effort but well worth the time.

This seam naturally traps dirt which in turn holds moisture. I have seen several restorations were this area rusted out in just a few years on what would otherwise have been a nice restoration.

Having trouble loading pics but I too can confirm after looking closely today that there is about 8 spot welds alongthe join :(. Sorry will try to post them again 2mo
