I work for an auto glass shop and the best way, that I am aware of, is to use dish soap when you install the gaskets and make sure not to put any sealant in the gasket. Most gaskets that i install in classic vehicles do not have to have adhesive or gasket sealer and even some will mess up a headliner if you do use adhesive. I haven't got my windows done yet on my pig but when I do I plan on using a rubber conditioner on my new gaskets. You can get this at O'Rielly auto parts here in Montana. I will get the info when I get back to work on Monday.

Yeah, it should definitely do it in that time frame. I installed a window in a 57 chevy pickup and was able to get it out without any damage to the gasket or window after about a year. As long as no adhesive is used and you don't let the rubber get too crispy, which should take alot longer than 6 months, you should be fine.

I have heard that Goop hand cleaner is great for softening rubber pieces?

Interested in a reply to your question too. When I go to replace windshield rubber would like to know what lubricant to use so I can lube waaaaaaaaaay ahead so I can get away with no breakage (if possible) on my windshield, et al.

Bump for any info on what is the best to apply to window gaskets prior to taking them off.....anything that will begin to soften stiff gaskets so are easier to remove. TIA, dave
I've used the goop hand cleaner method on all my heater elbows etc. It works but man is it a mess, it gets all sticky and trying to clean it all off before i installed everything was a real mess. Not sure how it would play out on gaskets that sit outside but in my experience it worked. Did I mention it was messy yet? =)
OK......maybe using liquid silicone carefully applied a week before??? I realize it would be greasy when it came time to put the knife and screwdriver to the rubber. I've got a headliner and the rubber but have not had the courage (or cash to have profess. installed) to begin the project.
