Would you buy a 200 with 150k miles on it for $25k?

Its not a great deal but its not horrible either. The difficult thing is finding a clean one which aside from the bumper rash this is. The radiator has been changed as there is no mark on the stamp location so maybe a denso or some other manufacturer. I bet water pump etc have also all been done by this point. Since its a one owner he should have all records and if it does not need anything right now (cannot see the auto check report for some reason to see what maintenance is on there) its not too bad and a 150k on these if well maintained is like its been broken in, not at the end of its life.

Just as a aside here are what 08's are going for at auction. 23-24 would be my guess of what this would pull at auction.

I wouldn't be scared of the mileage if it's in good shape. I paid a lot more for my LX with over 150,000 on it (given, it was a lot newer). Driven it for another 35,000 miles with zero issues. I feel like getting one in good shape with higher miles just makes it more affordable, but not a lot of drawback.

The red is the hardest to sell along with the gold...
I bought mine in Oct for $24k with 165k miles. It's the gold so it had been sitting on the lot and got them to take off $3k on price.
But the mileage definitely won't be an issue with a good maintenance history

I paid about $20K for a 1 owner southern poverty pack 08 Land Cruiser w/ 169K miles. It's proven to be a great buy and probably worth more than I paid for it a year ago now. I have no concerns with it plodding along for another 100K at least.

You should plug the VIN in at Toyota Owners to get the complete service history. Carfax won't have details or tech comments.

Wow we sure have a lot of engineers on this board who like to say they're engineers!

And this offends you because someone might look at things with a more critical perspective?

Frankly, the diversity of this group is what makes it interesting. An asset more than anything. The formally educated, the doers, or whatever you might want to be. No harm or foul for someone to share the perspective their coming from. Better than reading between the lines and assuming.

Just one thought on mileage. My 2016 has 66K on it and we've had it 2.5 years. But 90% of that mileage is highway/freeway driven at speed limit or just over. Not my daily driver (I don't commute). Maybe 2K miles towing a trailer. Maybe 500 miles of forest roads. I don't plan on ever selling this but I do think the type of miles and the driving style matters - not that there is any way to know that unless you know the owner.

The depreciation analysis is one thing to consider but you are also getting 40K miles less use out of the older/higher milage vehicle in that scenario and that's not taking into consideration the added/extra costs of maintenance the older/higher mileage vehicle will need.

These things are all relative. I think you are on the right path here, keep your eyes peeled for a southern truck with as low of miles as you can find for under $30K. Personally I would want a 2013+ but that would be beyond your listed budget.

Here is one local to me with less miles, in better shape, better color, has aftermarket mats and RW wheels. Let me know if you would like me to check it out for you. *(the link works) Autotrader - page unavailable

This is important. If you have a car fax you should see mileage at inspection and registration entries. See if the mileage was consistent between all owners and points in time or not.

I bought a 2008 same color last May for $27,500 in TX. It had 90,500 miles and remainder of an aftermarket warranty transferred to me for 18 more months or 18k miles. New water pump just before I bought it and serviced at Toyota.

Doesn’t offend me in the slightest bit. I just find it annoying when people constantly announce their profession on an Internet forum like that validates whatever opinion they have. It seems like ego stroking to me, and in the context I was referring to the person stated they were an engineer and then gave depreciation advice. Kinda irrelevant IMO. I gave my advice but didn’t qualify it by stating my profession which actually would have been relevant if you knew what I do, but most people don’t because I don’t think people want to hear me humblebrag all the time.

I don't consider it humblebragging. Call me old fashion, but I would certainly be interested in your experience or background especially if its your wheelhouse. On the interwebs where every butthole shares unfiltered opinion as fact... Not as bad on boards like these versus say social media, but it would still help sift through all the "crap" these days to gain a better understanding, especially if the topic is more in depth.

It's no coincidence that our modern world is heavily based on publications and papers that state author credentials - because it establishes basis and credibility - for information such that one can understand if information is reliable. Sure, I'm here for the opinions too because that's half the fun of it.

Auctions can be used as a benchmark for wholesale value, but used auto auctions are also where flood damaged vehicles and basket cases are dumped. Vehicles for sale by owner or dealer will always command a higher value. The condition of these vehicles is often less than ideal.

I saw that one too. Must have been owned by an ih8mud member.

I would just like to add that the Manhime Auction Calculator is a good indicator in the market value of the truck, the only thing to remember about that calculator is a good number of those trucks could be exported to South America and that inflates those numbers slightly...

Ps. I am only 41 years old but have owned:

8 Land Cruisers of various years,
9 4Runners,
1 G-wagon

over the years in the SUV arena.

The two most important things are the service history / condition and RUST FREE.

My wife keeps up to be annoying, but since getting married 17 years ago we have had about 40 cars... They are my toys....

This is the one the guy sent me to prove that his price was correct.

I got service records and it looks like everything checks out.

However, there were no major repairs listed. Would that mean a lot of major repairs in my future?

Look for replaced radiator, replaced starter, and replaced water pump. All of those are well past due for failure if not done already.

To which you can say with some rounding that the wheels, tires, sliders, starter replacement, and battery upgrade offer about $5k in value of parts alone, over $6k with labor. Nevermind the other upgrades also listed in ad. So if he wants to lower his price by your generous used part adjustment of $4k then he should consider meeting you at $22-ish.

You're dealing with someone who doesn't want/need to sell their vehicle so you're either gonna pay a premium to get him to let it go or you just need to find another one to buy. 🤷‍♂️
