Wok for camp cooking

I saw a show a while back that talked about how energy efficient the wok is for cooking. It showed people cooking a lot of food with a very small fire and made me think about using one for camp cooking.

Anybody using a Wok for cooking on the trail?
 
Pasquale AKA DesertDude had a propane fired wok at SnT (included wok, collapsible stand and burner) that seemed to work great. Don't know what brand, etc...but PM him for info.
 
I have a cast Iron one that Lodge makes :)
 
Woks are da shi...t thats why i bring mine with me when i go camping. specific wok burner by miele doubles as a cook top stove and is very very efficent.

If you have a cost plus around you i was there last week and they offered 4 different woks at different prices.

I would think a cast iron wok would defeat the purpose. Mine is fairly thin sheet metal so it heats and transfers heat rapidly, it is 15 years old and has developed a nice carbon coat that acts like a non-stick surface.

The miele burner looks nice. Good work mounting it up in the drawer system. I had the Camp Chef single burner in mind as a heat source. But I bet my good old Coleman gas stove would work just as well.

Large carbon steel woks are fairly easy to find. If you can't locate one, let me know...I come across them from time to time. I'm trying to recall where I saw a few, not too long ago...fairly big ones like what Pasquale has.

Not too expensive.


I'm sure you'd want carbon steel...so you can season it like you would cast iron.

The oriental markets here in town have a wide varity of sizes priced affordably.

I am willling to bet you are the only person in the world who has installed a $850 European wok burner to cook from their truck. I love it! We Mud bunch are some eccentric folks. :beer:

yeah. woks are handy to have. you're only limited by your imagination in what you can prepare in one.

the only issue that I'd have is that I'd need to start carrying a different stove/burner for the wok.

I've never had a special burner for my Wok. I just use the gas or electric burner on my stove. Why couldn't I use my trusty old Coleman gas stove? I have the three burner unit, that center burner gets pretty damn hot when it's the only one going. Hell it gets hot even with the other two on.
 
BTW: On the subject of imagination and wok cooking, dinner tonight was masaman chicken with vegatables and sobe noodles. Probably an abomadation of thai cooking but it was pretty damn tasty.

yeah, I suppose you could. it's just that I always use the little wind-guard deal on my coleman stove. my wok is too large in diameter to fit well that way.

No problem with my camp-chef 3 burner deal though...except for the weight of that unit...

The three burner unit looks like it would work great, to bad about the size and weight.

I think my Wok would work with the wind guard on my three burner coleman, they are a bit bigger than the two burner units and my Wok is kinda small.



Damn that didn't sound right. :o
 
i usualy use mine over an open fire. camp stove, we dont need no stinkin' camp stove.

Open fires are often not an option in the Northern Sierra. We go in and out of drought conditions prett frequently.
 
I actually really like the cast I ron setup. One ot is hot.. it stays hot.. But it is heavy ;)

Works great over a turkey fryer base :D

If it works for you thats all that counts.

The wok was originaly designed to heat quickly and transfer heat to the food as fast as possiable for quick cooking. The people who originated it had very little fuel available so wanted to get the most bang for the buck.

Or it could be because they were cooking on cow dung, I'd want to get that fire out as fast as possiable if it were me.
