I found a nice, somewhat clean wire (with a green connector) dangling down and rubbing that "round thing" at the head of the rear drive shaft. I'm assuming it's the power to the backup light switch (one of the few electrics I haven't gotten working yet).

Where is the switch - on top of the transmission somewhere? How do I reach it? Is it necessary to pull the inside cover to get to it?

BTW - also noticed a driver's side, uncovered flywheel window (kind of like the clutch arm window but the other side) while I was down there. I bet it should have a boot/cover? What is that window for?

Thanks

The round thing is the parking brake drum. On a '78 there's the reverse light circuit and a top gear circuit, both right on top of the tranny. I don't know if you can get there without taking out the tranny tunnel cover (and the seats and rear heater :crybaby:).

You could just zip-tie it up somewhere if you can't reach where it belongs. Ground it with the ignition on and see if the reverse lights turn on.

I don't ever remember seeing a clutch-fork-like hole on the driver's side.

It looks like it's supposed to have a rubber plug. SOR calls it a "bellhousing boot" - part # 018-35A

Single lead with a green plug is gonna be the 4th gear indicator. Emissions. You NEED to hook this up if you ever want the vacuum advance to get to the dizzy!

The other end of the lead should not be too far away. And it should also be green!

Best

Thanks Mark. Where is the 4th indicator - I've got the wire coming in/up from the group to the the connector, and from the connector the other lead - which has broken itself off something (indicator?) at the other end. Is it passenger-side forward?

Is this the top gear switch Fast Eddy mentions? How does this affect general operation?

Found these images here on another thread (thanks Martian). This is the wire - as Fast Eddy says, looks like some work to get to it. Might be time to POR15 my drivers side floor if I need to pull all that stuff.

Anyone have an idea how engine performance is affected with that high gear wire pulled off?

Fast Eddy - you can see the rubber boot/window in the lower-left corner of the 1st photo.

That rubber boot is starting to look familiar. Here's a picture from my tranny install showing the high-gear switch and the bellhousing boot:

It seems you should be able to reach up and feel the lead wire from the driver's side. I'm not sure about actually getting it plugged together.

The other opening on the bellhousing is for the right hand drive models. Specter sells a rubber plug wit a vent.

Problem is - mine seems to have snapped off at the switch. :frown: Guess it's time to pull all that stuff and POR15 the floor. Not sure if I should be trying to fix the wire/switch or replacing the whole switch? Should know more when I get in there. Does that big transmission cover require a gasket?

Anyone have an idea how engine performance is affected with that high gear wire pulled off - "no vacuum advance to get to the dizzy" as Mark said - would that impact engine idle, acceleration, etc.?
