I am interested on a bolt on application. I wish I was closer to Chesnee. I think if the price was right, less than 200 (guessing), then you could sell quite a few of these.

I thought taking the winch mounting bracket from northern tool and starting there.

It would probably costs close to 200 just in labor to make a very well refined version of these. That wouldn't include materials.

Very cool build. I've always wanted a hidden winch, or at the very least one that shows the fairlead only. I'll be in the market for a winch that will fit in the months to come. I have welders/tools to handle most of the work, but might have a local shop help w/ the fab work to make sure it's strong enough. Your pics will give me a good starting point!
Random quesion, but if you were to anchor the rear hitch to a tree to keep your rig from sliding...would there be a concern with causing frame damage? Or is your set up and frame strong enough? How about with a snatch block?
I would hope I never need to anchor my 3 ton vehicle, but for a badly stuck friend coupled with 18k lbs of pulling power, I wonder what would give first??

The rear hitch will hold up pretty much as long as the pulling force is applied gently, avoid shock load on the hitch (snatch strap/rope). For a simple anchoring i would not mind using the hitch, but For a very hard pull with a block, i would (whenever possible) use frame recovery points for anchoring, preferably both sides in a long "Y".
For snatch straps/ropes, always use the frame recovery points (not the "tie down" points or hitch).

For all recovery operations, think three times over what you are doing, it will often involve great forces, winch cables and towballs flying around aint as cool as it sounds ;)

Equiment in good quality and condition is often a mayor factor of success, wll/swl ratet lifting equipment is great for recovery use, as its breaking strenght is many times the ratet capacity (and the rated capacities can be trusted)

I recomend carrying the following minimum of equipment if there is a chance for offroad recovery:

- At least 4 rated shackles, wll from 3-5 metric tons.
- Winch extension line, about 30m will be fine, depending on terrain.
- Winch anchor, for very open terrain (where there are no trees).
- Tree strap (short, wide lifting strap). wll from 3t.
- Snatch strap, rated at least 10t breaking strenght for the 100.
- Snatch block.
- 5-10m wll 3t lifting straps, has many uses.
- Shovel.
- Axe.
- Spray can with starter gas and lighter for rebeading tires.

After the first one, the build time would be way down. Also, the metal shop could cut all the pieces and then they would need to be welded together.

Any idea what the price would be? I will probably have a friend build it for me. He has built sliders and rear bumper for his 80 series. He built it out of cardboard and then had the metal shop in raleigh make all the cuts and he welded them together. The pieces look great.

I really can not guess on a price, it all has to do with how much material and labor is involved.

I am a one man shop, not a big production facility. Everything is built on site, nothing is farmed out.

The winch mounts for the FJ Cruiser sell for $550.00

I'd be interested

I would be interested in this as well as the :princess: said she would be ok with a hidden winch

Thanks for the interest guys.

Have there been changes to the front plastic and frames over the run of the 100?

Anyone care to give theirs up for a few days?

Mounting of winchline, bumper and hook.
Only some minor finnish of the number plate bracket to do today...

Really nice job on this. I love the idea of adding a winch but not a steel bumber and the fact that it's completely discreet is really nice.

I'd like to do the same on my 2006 LC, although it'll probably be a while before i do. a couple of questions:
  1. where did you get the fairlead bracket you welded to the LC front cross bar? It dosn't look like you fabricated it?
  2. Also, Is there a reason you used steel bars and ribits to mount the control box of the winch? did it have to be repositioned to fit?
thanks, great post!!!
