I'm gonna offer $400 w/o the fairlead and mount. and see what happens.

I think that's wise. If the motor turns the drum, it's good. Yours looks exactly like mine, which was made in 1990. On mine. the clutch handle was very sticky, untill I took it apart, lightly sanded with emory paper and lubed it up. It works great now.

The solenoid pack is a risk, since Warn no longer services those solenoids. There is one source I found, if you buy the winch and want some send me another PM.

If you do buy it, make sure you split the case, and change the nasty funk oil in the winch.

Thanks Andrew..glad it looks like a model that you have had some experience with.

I'll know tuesday or so..

Its identical to mine (bought new in early '80s). Mines still going strong and I've used the piss out of it.

Don't let that one get away.

I would ask for the mount. Since the steel plate already has the holes and slot in the correct spot, it will simplify your fabrication to mount the winch. The seller has no reason to keep the mount without the winch. You can modify or build a bumper around that plate, so you'll be half way home before you start.

The one you are looking at is older than mine-that metal cover on the solenoid pack went away a long time ago.

don't really need his mount

I've got this brand new ARB waiting for a winch. Tha's why if he has a market for the mount, (and of course he does not, or both it and the winch would already be gone) he can keep it.

The winch you are looking at may be late 70's or early 80's. That winch has the cable wound pretty tight, if original it hasn't seen much abuse- probably no kinks/frays in the cables, wire insulation doesn't looked cracked, stickers on solenoid housing and drum support aren't too faded. I would gather that it has seen a lot of sitting time. It should freespool out and power in and out. The old bellview, manually operated (no solenoids) winch had a manual brake. This one has the clutch brake on the side which opens up when it powers out and has a cog that will catch the notches on the clutch housing as it powers in or is sitting idle. If it doesn't freespool out by pulling out the knob and pulling out the cable the clutch mechanism is seized up. It may take a while but you can get it freed up. I would definitely go through it before putting it to use. Change the oil which is a non detergent 30W I think. You can search warn's website but the parts catalogue only goes back to a certain number. The knob and the trailer style lead indicates that is one of the earlier of the 8274's. I think you're fine with that particular motor. When you take it apart the brush wear will tell you if it has been used a lot. Feel free to contact me if you need any help. Good luck, Kief.

Thanks Keif and all of you..

I won't be shy about asking questions, IF i get it. I can get a new one for $1000 or so or the M5000 @$500-550..so if he won't sober up I'll wait and go new.

Mine (early 80's) has the plastic cover and 5 pin configuration. Doesn't make any difference, but it might help "age" the winch. It looks to be in good condition, just been sitting around a long time.

Careful here----A working 8274 even if old is a much better winch than a new M8000 (which is what I assume you meant). You could try getting a firm price from a known retailer on the M8000 and offer in that range if he won't bit in the $400-$500 range.

One last thing. I was looking at the ARB on your FJ60. You know the 8274 won't fit that right? You can make it fit, of course, but it will involve some fabrication work. If it's the standard FJ60-62 bar, it was made to fit the M10000. It fits other winches that share the same basic footprint(one of the 9500s fits right in with no modification), and will fit an M12000 with just a bit of grinding. Also an M8000 will fit on the bar, but you'll need to space it out just a bit with a small stack of washers under each mounting bolt between the winch and the bumper.

Cruiserdrew, If you look at the bullbar, the light tabs are outside of the middle section. The one I modified to fit my M8274 had the tabs in the center. There are two bullbars made for the 60-series. One has the mounting tabs outside the center section and the front mounting holes are centered; whereas the other bullbar designed for the laydown has the light tabs in the center section and the mounting holes are offset to the passenger side. The newest 60-series bullbar is a one bullbar fits both the laydown and upright (M8274) winches.

Yes it's a 8274 bull bar. Number ends in "30". Kurt and I got it down before he ordered it for me. talked to arb too. this bar should fit the 8274 and the XD9000 and MD8000 as a bolt in.. No big deal if the 8274 won't fit..I'm not totally hung up on that winch, just like the retro look.

Yes I ment the M8000 had $500 on my mind..

I have an 8274 that is close to that. Don't know the age. It's on a 78 FJ40 that I bought a few years ago. I did notice in the pic that the plug for the control is metal. Mine is plastic and I have been told that that is a newer model. Anyone know when they went to the plastic plug?

Later,

I've e-mailed Warn customer service with the photos of this winch and questions as to the model year and when all these chages were made. Being a holiday weekend, President's day, I'll not hear from them until tuesday. I do know that the 8274-50 came out in 1998 that being the 50th anniversary of the 1948 start of Warn. However the -50 has had some changes since then, cosmetic mostly it would seem but maybe some electrical stuff too.. I'll post up what ever I find out.

8274 Upgrade link?

Anyone have the link to the company that makes the upgrade kit for the 82674/ I think it has some gear reduction and an improved oiling system. I think they were in th uk?

Ya that's it... gigglepin4x4. Think that's strong enough for a built 80?? amaaaazing line speed:)

What WARN says:

Talked to Warn today. Sent them the photos, the guy said it was a late 70s winch. The number I had 76442, was not a serial number.

He agrees that it looks like it is in very new condition, but agrees with all of us that the old guy maybe forgot when he bought it..30+ years ago. (of course the guy may have bought it 10 years ago and was told it was brand new at that time, form the looks of it now 10 years ago it would have passed for new).

The metal plugs switched out in the 80s, he couldn't say just when.

If the selinoid pack goes out he says the new ones will work on it. the new motor will bolt right on too. Said doesn't matter if the old motors from any model of 8274 are out of production or non-rebuildable, just bolt on the new componets.

"that's one clean old winch there" Was his opinion, He said $600 would not be too much for it compared to a new one, but less would be better (duh!)

I'm gonna make this guy a offer, if it falls through I'll see if he wants me to pass it on to Mudders.

thanks again for all the input.

JON

That's MY winch you'r talking about there...

I have purchased the subject winch. I won't have it here for a week or so..I'll let you know what I got, when I get it..
