Alright, so some minor dampness in my right rear wheel turned into a full-blown, axle-grease spraying horror in the span of a commute. The one this morning from work. Long story short, the brake shoes started dragging, and by the time I got home, they were faded. Let it cool down, and just to get her to limping, I disassembled the drum, and took the shoes and arms out, just so I wouldn't have a flaming tire problem. Basically, I was just trying to get my only driving vehicle to limping long enough to get her in a shop (earliest will be Tuesday, since I'll need at least a day to book an appointment at Yodaman's

My question is: what're the odds I'll die before Tuesday? My solution was suicidal at best, but it seemed like a logical answer for jerry-rigging something for a few days.

I have experience with a vehicle with no rear brakes, it sucks, but I can still stop, and fortunately, I mainly use my engine and transmission to get the primary speed reduction. Additionally, I'm a fairly steady driver, and don't tailgate, so I feel safe there.
Whatever the case, I'll throw a fire-extinguisher in there for emergencies, and run my cell phone charger on my inverter until all's clear.

Here are the poll options:
1: Yer gonna die
2: 50/50
3: be careful, it's only three days!

just finished up bleeding the brakes, and the pedal feels rock-solid.

To keep the open cylinder from bleeding all over the place, I used a scrap hard-line from Phoenix that I crimped up. it still drips some, but seems to work for now. So long as I keep checking the fluid, I can make it to Tuesday.

I'll take choice #1 Chuck!* ROFL..

How many of us could you have just gotten off your butt and emailed?
(*OK, well, then again I don't reply and have lagged in here lately.)

I was at ToyConnection today and could have easily grabbed you a part and had you pay me in gas $, pizza, and comical entertainment.

Call Larry and get your thing in there man, he'll get you rolling.

*You have no idea how long I have been saving up that first comment for just the right time. :D

I bet you all missed me, just a little. ;)

Just got to work tonight, and everything held up a-okay, after the bleed, these brakes are stronger than ever, and no issues with having only 3 brakes, but I'm still waaaay uneasy with it. I'll give Larry a call as soon as I get back in town from work Monday morning.

and Norcal, dude, I have no idea what's going on in those pics, besides chaos... oh, and "Vegan Nomz?" I though Vegan food was the stuff you use to lure unsuspecting prey animals so they can be trapped, roasted, and eaten! :D:D
Pretty funny stuff, all things considered.

"This thread is worthless without pics" or "Pics or it didn't happen" was supposed to be the first reference.

Combat Chuck=Chuck reference with Chuck Woolery, game show hose, choose what's behind curtain #1 type of thing, get it? Chose "Yes" "No" or "Be Careful" = 3 different curtains.

Now I get it!

Nope, still kickin'!
The Mule will be at Yodaman's at 0900. Budget-wise, all I can afford are the seals installed, I was hoping things could last until this next paycheck, (three days) but... crispy brake shoes say otherwise.

:) I called him today to figure out what I was doing wrong or needed to do right on my rear drum brake adjustment. Took him all of a minute to help me out.

I like Larry, he's always cool. Take pics of what they're all up to these days. If the correct set of tires arrive by Friday I might head up that way to visit you all for a day or so and drive around the area.

Yeah, Larry and everybody there's awesome. I even shot the breeze with Paul a bit about airsoft.

Dude, if you're up there to visit, let me know, and we could meet up, maybe head over to In-N-Out (Stand-N-Wait), it's just a short walk down the railroad tracks to RP.

Alright, so the damage was:

The right rear bearing blew up. That's the cause. took out the backing plate and seal, the plate rubbed on the drum, creating friction, igniting the grease soaked into the compromised brake shoes. The heat and limited flames melted the guts out of the brake cylinder, and did a fair sear on the shoes, meanwhile, the inner axle was carved up like a Thanksgiving Turkey. I wish I'd taken my camera out of the cab of my truck to show this, but the backing plate looked like it had teeth, and the inside of the drum looked like the sooty inner workings of my dad's gas Webber. (he never cleans the thing, it looks he he looted it from a torched house).

Larry told me outright that the only thing keeping the inner axle in was the c-clip, that I was pretty much lucky to be here.

The best part is: Larry knew my budget, and cut me some slack, sold me an inner, backing plate and bearing from a donor axle for 75 bucks.
all things considered, they did an amazing job, The Mule feels like her olds self again, but now, with all the grease she spewed all over the driver's side, I'm less worried on the subject of rust!

Moreover, I need to express my satisfaction with the services done by Yodaman, from day one, they've been awesome. The day I dropped by to sign the paperwork, they had her in the shop, and techs changing out light bulbs, checking the wiring, and inspecting her overall. They went out of their way to help me get title through a lien sale, at their expense, and then this huge break they cut me with the donor parts.
Long story short, I will be back, I way happy with them.

and I ran into Dion while I was there.

Poll results.

I chose to look at 'em now, after the fact, because I didn't want to know until everything was fixed. As my childhood hero said: "Never tell me the odds!"

4 said I'd die
3 said be careful
1 said it's 50/50.

alot of confidence, thanks.

Well I figured either you would or you wouldn't so fiddy fiddy shot.

Yepper, that seems the safest bet.

'twas all in good fun!

well are you dead or did you get it fixed ? cause it's almost friday

The Mule's back to her old self again, thanks to Larry and his team at Yodaman. That said, it was a budget-conscious quick-fix, and I'm still running on used bearings, so I'll be budgeting for a full rebuild soon.

Chuck, sorry to hear of your woes. I am glad you have a connection to a good mechanic, that is a must, for someone like me especially.

Did you make it to Pismo? If so how did the mule go? I ended up taking the new 100, it was the only way my :princess: would go when it came down to the line.

My boss held out the revised schedule until the last possible minute, so I didn't book a site, and didn't have a menu together, so I went north instead, and visited my grandparents.
I wheeled a bit, went shooting with my grandad amd just about ate my weight in biscuits, it was a great time.
Next year, I hope to make it. If not, maybe the following year. I'm about three semester from my AA now, so someday I'll actually have TLCA time.

Anywho, thanks for checking in, it looks like SNT was fun, I wish I could've been there, but life hasa way of complicating things. and a hundy's not a bad ride, imagine what would've happened should you have arrived in say, an Odyssey?
Take care man!
