like the thread title says, i was trying to find out if a tranny out of a 94 4Runner will fit my 2X4 pickup, i have the 22re motor.

also how hard would it be to put the axles of the runner under my truck?

i know where there is a wrecked runner and i can probably gets the parts really cheap, which is good since i'm broke anyway. but regardless of how cheap if they won't fit i don't want to get them.

So you intend to swap 4WD trans & transfercase plus IFS under your 2WD pickup? Ambitious. If the 4runner is a 22re manual the trans swap is cake. The front drive is another story. I would strongly consider a live axle swap up front, for the guy that doesn't mind welding on his frame it is just too easy. The rear axle will be handy when you get your SAS done.

No. Unless you have a rare 22re 4Runner, the only way to bolt the R150 tranny to the 22re is w/ the R151 bellhousing... good luck finding one.

As for the 4wd swap, your only option is a solid axle swap.

Did the 94 4Runner have a 22RE in it to start? If it did, then it should be a bolt in swap. I have been told by several different people, that know the Toyota trucks very well, that the front IFS axle and drive parts from a 4x4 will bolt into a 2x4 chassis of the same year. They told me, all Toyota did was leave out the front drive components on the 2x4 trucks. I may be wrong. But, I have looked at the front suspension on a 92 4Runner 2x4 and it looked identical to that of a 4x4 of the same year but without the front drive components.

Put your truck side-by-side with the donor vehicle and look real close at the front suspensions before you start taking things apart.

thanks for the info, my tranny is shot so i have to have a new tranny and i was trying to find the cheapest one around.

and i thought if i was going to get any parts (ie the tranny i need) off of a wrecked runner, i might as well get everything that will fit my truck.

thanks again

That information is horribly incorrect. It holds true only of two vehicles: 4Runners (90-95 and 96-02) and the Tacoma pre-runner. The 2wd pickups are a completely different animal; different front suspension, different frame, etc.

Even if the donor 4Runner has a 22re, it likely has the W59 transmission rather than the W56, and therefore comes w/ a chain drive tcase and different tcase mounts. I don't think I'd use that combo, personally, as I think the W56/gear tcase is a better solution.

that is good info.

here is what the add says

..what i have is,wiring harness for 4x4 22re complete from engine bay to cab not cuts or splices with ecu. 2 22r carbs 2 22r valve covers,20r with 2wd tranny runs...

so here is my dumb question for the day, should i be able to see the w56 stamped somewhere on the housing?

edit: just to clarify i am not really wanting to convert to a 4X4 i just thought it might be a cheap extra if possible. i mostly just need a good tranny for my truck

Here's some pics of manual trans. on marlins site:

What's wrong with yours that you think you need a whole new one?

great sight but thats the kind of pricing i am trying to stay away from right now.

you probably missed my peanut butter thread, long story short i was dumb enough to believe the super-lube guys when they said my tranny gear oil was fine. when i checked it it was like black peanut butter. i flushed it a couple of times with kerosene. then refilled with gear oil ran that about 10 miles then drained and filled again. drove about 600 miles on that drained and filled again. still getting pieces of shavings and 4th gear is still not working. it kicks out of 5th gear and now when i down shift to 3rd its having a hard time..

i found a cheap tranny local, but it came out of a truck with a 20r motor, i am worried about getting them to match up.

Hehe peanut butter.... I read almost every post in this section, cause I'm responsible for what goes on here! :D I just cant keep track of all the screen names... Sorry Amos!

I posted the marlin link to help you id your trans, and maybe the one you are thinking about getting. The trans behind the 20R is probably the L43, and I think in will bolt up to a 22R/RE block, but the early trans did have some issues like input shaft bearing failure...

no - the marlin link is the kind of info i needed, i was just giving a little background on why i need a new tranny.

i went by and checked the tranny, shifter was gone, drained plug had been pulled and by the look of the residue left on the bottom, there is alot of rust and or water in the tranny. so i am going to pass on that tranny and keep looking around. if i cann't find one by the the end of february i may have to go with a marlin.

that heavy duty marlin looks great, and if you noticed my sig, this truck is the red-headed step child. i work this little truck pretty hard sometimes but i always keep the oil changed and check everything, 198K miles and still does not burn a drop of oil. the problem was i paid someone else to check/change that stuff this last year and i should have done it myself.

i got a tranny. w-56

looks pretty good.

having trouble getting the old one out, someone told me last night they think you have to twist one of these a little to unlock it. have any of you guys ever heard that?

No, turning is not usually needed... Do you have the starter out? The starter bolts hole the trans in as well... Also there are a couple bolts that go in from the front on the bottom of the bell housing... Hope that helps.

yeah - the top starter nut was the last one i took off and i saw the bellhousing seperate from the motor block when i took that one off.

i'll check the front bottom again, but i am pretty sure i got both of those out.

Sometimes if things aren't greased when they go together, getting it apart can be a real bear.... You got the 2 at the very top of the bell housing? Those are a pain sometimes.

2nd starter nut or 2nd bell housing bolt?, i think i got them both.

the top two bolts on the bell housing i used about 2ft of extensions and went from the back of the tranny over the top. it was still a bear to get the socket on since i was kinda guessing at where the bolt was.

the top starter nut i used the extensions but had to cramp my arm down between the firewall and motor, to get the socket to actually go on the nut. arm is still a little bruised.

i was thinking of getting a floor jack under there and seeing if i need to get a little weight off of it. i was thinking i could just gorilla grunt it out, but maybe my age is catching up with me.
