Why I love my 80 HDFT turbo diesel

It was tuned to 17:1 AFR on spool and 20:1 on boost to the governor. Puff of black off the mark, EGTs stable on a long hard pull at about 700c, timing at 1.3mm lift as per pump builders spec and 26 psi of boost. 160rwkw and 610 rwnm from memory.
Seriously miss that truck...😭
I'll never sell mine. Grandkids will drive it if there is still fuel on the planet... Took two years to convert from gas to diesel and build the camper. Has 18 gallons of water in two tanks under the car. One has a circulating pump with a thermostat and a heat exchanger and heats water in 20 min to 55C for shower and kitchen sink. I wrote a blog about this...

You don't happen to or used to live in Northern Colorado did you?

Yep. I live near Ft Collins and work near Longmont. Where are you? Have we met by chance?

Those are mighty impressive numbers. 22.5 us mpg is ~10.5 l/100. The only way my HDJ100 will do that is with highway tires and cruising at <100kmh (60mph). I average 13/100 cruising @ 120kmh with Maxxis MT tires.

Is your HDJ100 an auto or manual? Share some more info and photos! My folks have an HDJ100 manual (4:10 gearing with H151F) and it seems to struggle to get near the numbers my 80 gets with regard to fuel mileage and the trucks are both armored and filled inside with toys and goodies to about the same weight I would guess. I like driving their 100 and have great respect for the HDFT-E. I plan to convert my UZJ100 to an HDFT-E some day real soon. That or import a nice Euro spec HDJ100 to save the headache of conversion. ;)

5 speed auto. It's European, so VNT turbo. It's nice as it has good grunt across the range, but apparently it's pretty hard to tune them. The Australian models, which 95% of tunning iinformation is about, have regular wastegate turbo.

Here are a few engine bay photos, which I guess are of more interest to this board. Otherwise it's still a J10, so not much different than the UZJ100.

Like the 1HD-FT the FTE is single camshaft 24 valve, so the rockers are pretty wild. Also factory dual batteries in parallel.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

One thing to consider is the quality of the diesel. Depends on how much BTU per gallon will directly affect your mpg. Not all diesel fuels are the same. This is something to investigate depending on which country you live in.

@Moridinbg
I see your HDFTE doesn’t have the power heater option. What market in Europe is your truck from? The Netherlands or France or? How long have you owned it?

I see a lot of Euro spec HDJ100’s that have no sunroof and cloth interior. Many also have the hydraulic suspension.

Originally from Spain, which should explain no power heater, but doesn't explain WHY I DON'T HAVE THE CENTER CONSOLE FRIDGE THAT ALMOST EVERY OTEHR EUROPEAN TRUCK HAS :| Had it for an year.

The cloth interior and no sunroof is very very rare. There are a few 5 speed manuals too, just as rare. I have seen some photos of ones with no AHC, but almost all of them have it, starting all the way back in 1998. The LX470 is virtually nonexistent here (did they even officially market it?), so they kind of merged them. It's a similar story with LC200/LX570.
