Covers can go to some pretty impressive places..

Actually, a 4x4 chinook could even do the con if you were careful.

My pop up with a queen size bed can go most place the average guy would want to go. At least more places then any sportsmobile or a earthromer:princess: One thing for sure every set up has a list of pros and cons.

If they keep paving the trial pretty soon I can drive my Grand Marquise over it.

So what category does my dually and camper fall into, it's on page 6

I'm betting this could go all sorts of places..

I'm not a recreational vehicle classification expert :) but it's still just a truck with a camper on it, even though it's a darn big one. While it does add a lot of height, it's still based on the wheelbase of your truck and seems like it's still fairly maneuverable in tight places.

No worse than a 60

This is a statement made without knowledge of what RVing can be. It's just your impression of what RVing is.

RV's are classified into a few general catagories.
TT travel trailers
Tent trailers.
Campers
And motorhomes, which are subdivided by size;
  • Class A are the big diesel pushers bus type motor homes
  • Class B basically any van conversion from a Sprinter to a Sportsmobile
  • Class C is the classic mid size motorhome with the bed over the cab.
About the only type that really doesn't offer a version that could be used for back country camping is the Class A motor home. We even ran into a guy in Death Valley that had done a 4WD conversion on a 70's Winnebago Minnie Class C. He was having a gas exploring the back country roads there.

I think the up & coming "Cruise Moab" is a good example of how Mudders embrace RVing. Some will show up with RVs and others with RTTs or however they roll. I've registered and I'm a 1st timer for it. Read the threads in the past and oogled at the possibilities for wheeling in this event. I've replaced my RV and will be hopefully towing my '81 Mini to Moab in a couple of weeks. Working the bugs out and making lists. The new RV (well, new to me) is a '97 F350 Crew Cab 7.3L Power Stroke. I'm sticking with a slide in, but a more current 2006 Lance 11'. My testing has revealed good results. Definitely enough power for both camper and towing the 80 series up hills, so the Mini should be a snap. Here's a few pics and hope to see y'all at Cruise Moab!

Yesterday my wife and I joined the RV set. We purchased a North Trail 31 footer. This thing is huge and my wife and kids are thrilled! This is her idea of camping!

This has probably been said already, but I'd guess that most mudders are pouring money into their Land Cruiser instead of a RV :D

Amazing the threads you find after a forum conversion ...

Four-wheeling is what started me down the RVing path. I wanted some comforts of home and a good base camp that was reasonably secure ... and I needed to be able to tow by exploring rig. Started with a dually and truck camper, tried a "super C", a diesel class A and a few others. As many have pointed out, a few are built really well and a lot are only so-so. I ended up with a truck conversion (or really HD Super C) that is built like a brick sh-t house. I still enjoy tent camping, but I guess I am getting a bit soft as I get older and I enjoy the comfort of the RV.

You can never cost justify one of these behemoths, you have to just enjoy them.

To @GLTHFJ60 's point, yeah, I prefer pouring $$$ in the LC. Maintenance on these things really is not as bad as one might think ... annual service is ~$350 and I pay someone to do it because I cannot catch 6 gallons of oil. Where things get expensive is the once every 5-7 year tire purchases.

At any rate, to the OP's question ... there are some of us who enjoy RVing, but this being a cruiser forum, I don't talk about it too much.

Here's a pic of our setup from July of 2013 while in Vernal, UT - packed up for the drive back to Charlotte ...

@TXLX100 Thanks ... as far as these things go, it is fairly Spartan but well built. 28' box on a Freghtliner 33,000 pound M2 chassis. With two of us and three cats, can get a little tight ...
