Why all the hate on the FJ80 3FE (cost of ownership)

love my 3FE for the most part. Already worked on it quite a bit and it is incredibly easy to do. Did wish it had more power but the 93+ don't come with that much more power. Not in any hurry to get rid of it but I am interested in a 4bt or ls1 change in the future... just can't decide if I want to switch to diesel or stay with gas.

Sorry to disapoint,

I will never ever buy a 3f underpowered, 30ltr/100km car again... it is just a wrong choice of motor for an 80series.

Toyota should have just posponed until they got the 1fzj running.

PS.My fj80 transplanted in 2005 with a turbo diesel is now a real car.

Sorry???? You will not dissapoint anyone buy not buying a 3FE.

To each his own,...honestly depends on what your used to

I like the fact that the 3FE has a 4.0L, the same a most Heeps. Compare that!

Again, Different strokes for different folks, for example:

take a 3FE with no heavy mods vs. a 1FZ with 200lbs on the front via ARB and winch and 200lbs on the rear via with bumper and spare plus 100+ in tools. I bet Now the trucks might have a pretty close race. From a dead stop the 3FE is a slug compared, but once you get it up in the power band it is not that bad. I drive mine like its a 22RE if I need to

My truck holds the same speed on highways and up the steep mountain highways here in Colo with the 37's I have now as it did with the Michelin 265/75/16's it had when I got it!

As for not having the lockers, the more weight you add from mods the more you will wish you had the lockers.

I just got my first speeding ticket in over 10 years with the 3FE. 58mph in a 45. I asked the officer, are you sure?!

I was almost home after 12 hours of surgery, music playin', dinner waitin'! I didn't even realize I was goin 58. I just got off of the interstate ramp. Turned down a rural road that changes to 55 after a mile. I was 200 ft from the 55 MPH sign. I'm goin to driver's school to avoid having it put on the record. 25 years of driving, and I'm going to go see what can happen in a wreck (20 years in surgery, and trauma too).

Yea, the 3FE is plenty fast enough for me.

driving through mud = fun
driving through mud with my 3fe and not getting stuck = priceless

No hate, only love for my 3fe.

Like most of you I love my 3fe. It gets me through the woods better then any vehicle I've ever owned. What I like best is the reliability. I cannot say the same for the 5.7 liter chevy I had before my 80.

With alot of the mods suggested on here the 3fe can also have a certain sweet spot that makes it feel just right.

I was skeptical when I purchased mine, but the 3FE grows on you. There's nothing like that ancient grunt that this engine bellows from under the hood.

With 80s it truly all does depends on what you need it for,

Here in Tanzania, the 3fe is rejected because its "very thirsty" gasoline and most folks here prefer the 1HDT under their hoods.

If only they knew what the 3fe's offroad capabilities really were I'm sure the terrain here would make them reconsider.

It surprises me when our Tanzanian spare part shops and auto repair garages don't know what an o2 sensor is & where it goes in the truck (even in the capital city!) or how everyone here thinks that the 3FE is a very unreliable engine because of a poorly set up EGR system when the solutions to their problems are right here on MUD.

For me, the 3FE does the daily duty as well as it does the adventures!

The 3FE has history, kinda like wisdom in the mechanical world. Also, if you put it into perspective, it is almost more "rare", cause you could only get one for a couple of years....

Rare, wise, the 3FE.....

3 fe

The 3FE and the 1FZFE are apples and oranges IMO. For a daily driver i think the 1FZFEs more poies makes it more desirable. In the woods the 3FE rules. That old tractor motor pulls down low like a naughty school boy. Love it.

I was hoping that Jonheld would chime in on this, and he did, in his usual get-to-the-point fashion.

3fe - got-to-love it!

I love my 3fe. It runs well and I think it moves my 80 along just fine. But I wont lie. A v8 or a 4bt would be nice.

Not bagging, but...

3F-E - 155 HP, 220 lb-ft torque

1FZ-FE - 212 HP, 275 lb-ft torque

When was the year change for the 3f-e to the 1fz-fe? What is the difference? Mine has a vain airflow type air mass meter. So far it has been super reliable, runs like a sewing machine.

It changed over to the FZE in 1993. The last 3FEs were seen in 1992 and I think had a vane type airflow meter.

Just look at the plate under your hood near your firewall. It should specify what your 80 is being powered by.

This is an old and useless thread. This horse has been beaten to death.

FWIW, I've driven my 3FE equipped 22 year old truck from Jersey to Utah and back twice in the last 2 years. I was pulling an M416 trailer with 5 36" Swampers. Wheeled the piss out of it in Moab for a week, swapped tires, and drove home. Other than going over the Rocky Mountains, I set the Cruise control to 70, cranked up Zeppelin, and drove with 2 fingers on the wheel for 4400 miles.

You can take your horespower specifications and shove them. In 22 years of ownership and 20 years of wheeling, I have NEVER run short of power when it was needed. In low range it will climb anything in front of it as long as the tires have traction.

It is the single most reliable vehicle I have ever owned and has come to the rescue for my family, friends, and neighbors more times than I can count.

Bottom line. It's an 80 Series and they don't move quickly. When I need to go fast I steal my wife's new 3 Series.

The change from the 3F-E motor (FJ80) to the 1FZ-FE (FZJ80) was in 1993.
The 3F-E has a big "3FE" in red letters on the top of the intake manifold. The 1FZ-FE has a big "1FZFE" on the valve cover.

It's not too difficult to tell what's under your hood.
Your 1994 is a 1FZ-FE.

Thanks, what did they change to make it 1FZ-FE? Sorry, should prob. do a search. I have not seen any reason to change from the vain air mass meter to the Hot film with it running as good as it does.

This thread started in 1997, there are tons of threads that talk about the +- of each year/model, just do some searches and read up. The answer to "what did they change to make it a 1FZ-FE" is that it is an entirely different motor, not changes to the 3fe.
