so I can shift the t-case to neutral when moving? I was thinking of doing this when i was first testing the noise, but stopped because I wasnt sure if it would cause any problems.

I assume i would have to be in Neutral with the transmission shifter before I shift the t-case into neutral?

You need to be on a road were you can stop. I should have stated that you have to be stopped to shift it back into gear.

You do not need to be in Nuetral. But others will chime in here to correct me. I did not take the Tranny to Nuetral before shifting the Tcase to Nuetral.

finally found the culprit, rear pinion bearings were shot.

After laughing at the local dealership when they suggested that the entire rear differential be replaced for 1800$ I took it to a local 4wd shop so they could try and locate the noise. Apparently its the pinion bearings. Anyone replaced these before? How hard is it?

Agree with Curtis' question. No makee sense unless the diff's been run out of fluid. I've heard of this on the front diff, but never on a rear.

im not sure how it was diagnosed, the 4wd shop told my dad, he told me. The rear pinion seal was leaking for a while thist past summer, and we had it replaced about 7,000 miles ago. There was no way the diff was run dry by the pinion seal leak but maybe it leaked enough that it damaged the bearings or toyota dealership somehow damaged them while they were replaceing the seal.
I dont know.
