I am at a quandry..

Bunch choices available to me at this point.

I have to figure out what to do about a dizzy. What I am working with right now flatt out sucks. Currently I am running a small cap fully electronic dizzy with a blaster ignition.. The problem is that the MSD box needs a full 12 volts during cranking. Even with a jumper there is too much of a load on my system to provide that. What it means is that when I try to start the truck in the morning, it won't. It turns over just fine. But won't fire. So one quick tug, and it fires.. then there is not a problem firing all day. but the next morning.. Tug tug tug..

Options available.

Try to find a Toyota Mini Truck coil/ignition pack.. (Andre had one for sale but I blew that...) and send the spare small cap dizzy to Jim C to have him rebuild it and recurve it..

See if I can get Dhondagod to fix my HEI dizzy.. (not all that impressed with this option.. I don't like how big the HEI is)

Switch to the "non USA" vac advance dizzy with a petronix unit in it.. Then send it to Jim C for a recurve...

The non usa unit sounds awfully nice. But I have always like the sealed small cap electronic unit.

I need to do something about this. A tug in the morning to get started sucks (and makes for too many photo opportunities... F'n Mark.. )

How 'bout an 81-87 Cruiser coil & ignitor? It'll spark down below 10volts, so it's easy to start. Open the plug gaps to .045 and use metal wires and it'll make a hella spark. And it plugs into your current 78-80 dissy. And it only needs one 12V power wire.

Nother option there. kinda sucks because I sold one not too long ago lol

That's what I get for selling anything..

The think I am liking more and more about the older dizzy is if the computer fails, I drop in a set of points and go on my merry way..

Propane does not require the hot spark that gasoline does. So a hyped up electronics unit is not as necessary. But I hate adjusting points...

Hmm..

Really?! I thought it was the opposite, here I was researching what I should do for a distributor for when I convert to propane, maybe I’ll just leave my OG 155F points distributor. Just recurve it, and run with it. I guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…

Propane has a higher effective octane so it burns slower, but because it is a gas already, it does not need as much "fire" to ignite..

That's easy.
Electronic reliability, reversible to points, no need for huge spark power (duh, it is a 2F) = Pertronix dropped into a E-1968 vac advance dissy (AKA non-US dissy).

Just get a Toyota ignitor. There must be something wrong with the MSD, because there aren't any cars that put out a full 12V during engine cranking. As long as it sparks with the normal spark plug gap, it will start and run great. Anything more is wasted energy and leads to insulation breakdown and reliability problems.

Yeah, the Msd is not functioning correctly.. But it is hard to exchange something that sat for 4 years before install ;)

the advance mechanism was not working properly..

It would not return to Zero advance.

Anyone else??

I am probably just going to run the old dizzy with a petronix..

Jason, IIRC, you said that the vacuum advancer part of the dizzy wasn't a criteria for you, as the propane and turbo combo meant that you were looking to rely completely on centrifical advance. Is my memory correct on this?

If so, I have a JDM early firetruck dizzy that is mechanical advance only, point style, pertronix compatible that might be perfect for your plans.

Call me at the shop Monday and I'll see if I can put my hands on it.;)

Best

Mark A.

I am setting up my "new" 40 to run a 79 small cap with the corresponding coil/ignitor. If that goes bad, I have an FJ60 coil/ignitor. If that goes bad, I have minitruck coil/ignitor. New units from Toyota are extremely expensive, so the pertronix looks like a good option in an older distributor.

Thanks, Jason.........runs like a Swiss watch;p ........Thanks to JimC:D

Mark, you are exactly correct..

I switched to propane for simplicity.. And this fawking ignition system is such a pain in the butt...

No vac advance and simple sound oh so nice ;)

Bite me Ed :flipoff2:

Thanks Mark :)
