Point taken fellas.

The 305's, from what I read on the 100 threads, should work without a lift. Some have mentioned a little rubbing. Would you suggest something else? I hesitate to ask on the 100 thread because there have been soooo many discussions about tire size already. I've searched for days trying to find a suitable answer and the 305 seems to pop up more often than not. And, yes, a lift is in the works...eventually. Like I said in the original post, the hundy isn't built "yet". The logical place to start seems to be tires and sliders since I can't afford tires, sliders and a lift at the same time. JP made a good point--how quickly do I want to be on the trail? And, how comfortable will it be for the wife and baby J-Bo (as of March '08) as a dd while still able to take a camping trip with y'all once in a while?

I can't speak from personal experience on the fit of the 305s without a lift but I can tell you that 295s fit and ride well without any rubbing on or off road (mild). That being said, there isn't a lot of extra space. See my OBX Trip Report thread for pics of the 295s without a lift and the RBs still installed. 305s will generally be a little bit wider and taller, but not much. Differs for each manufacturer and tire too.

HTH...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but the wife needs some kind of step.

We are in the same boat. That's why when I got back from the Holyland, I put the running boards back on. Your solution may be to get some sliders (I like SROR) with some small tubes, which function well as a step.

Thanks for the head's up!

Yours looks good with the 295. I did some more reading last night and saw lots of 285's as well. I'll shop around.

You are smart to keep the wife happy with a step. I don't have a hundy, but with my FJ Cruiser, it's a darn good thing I have sliders on that thing otherwise I wouldn't be able to haul myself up into it these days. I have a 3" lift and 285's on my truck.

Congrats on the baby! When is she due? My daughter is due in March too!

I guess I'm hyjackin' my own thread...

We're due March 15. It's a boy. I want to name him Frederick Joseph so we can call him FJ. Nevermind...I know it's dumb.

Congrats to you too! Hope all is well from now til then and for many years after...

Are you Heather? (I just read your sig line) Did you write the letter in the Toyota Trails? If so, thanks. I'm just getting started with the off road thing. Looks like we all have got a lot of work to do to keep trails open.

Ok, now we're back: I've called a few places today to price some tires and I'm leaning towards the 285 for no other reason than they cost about $50ea. less than the 305.

I say go for the welder, learn and make your own. Yes, you will initially pay more, but in time, you will get better at the skill, be able to make more things, take more pride in your equipment, and even be able to pass down the skill to your son. Believe it or not, Lowe's has some decent Mig Welders for a decent price. Go for a unit that's capable of 140+ amps(you want to be able to penetrate .25" or thicker steel). Yes, it's expensive, but it's a tool that will get used a lot over time. The more you build w/ it, the more it justifies the cost. Learn on scrap, do your research and go for it!! Like I said, down the road, you'll have FJ involved and fabricatin in the garage right beside you. I think that justifies the investment of the welder, personally. Just my .02. Congrats, btw and good luck!

Solution: Welder, design your sliders for the wife. I will say though that Slee's sliders looked REALLY nice on Gearguy's 100 at PPR and pretty hefty too. I still say welder, but that's me. I designed/built mine cuz I wasn't happy w/ anything on the market.

Tomorrow I'm getting 285's. We'll start there and see how it goes.

Later,

J-Bo

BFG AT 285/75 R16. I know there's plenty of other choices out there but I've had these on my blazer and tacoma and never had any problems. Either way, they should have better traction than the LTX.
