I've owned this 77 cruiser for a few years and recently moved back east from Arizona which is where I bought it and now I would like to get it painted. All of the rust is just surface rust. Will I need to have a blasted or can I just sand it by hand? I want to paint it back the original color, dune beige. I do not have the time or funds to have a frame off restoration so where should I start?

i Love the patina it has, personally i think it looks amazing and has tons of character. If the rust isnt eating it up to canada spec baseball sized holes don't worry about it.

Yup I would leave it, and move back to Arizona so it stays that way!! If thats not an option...wait for the pros to chime in. Curious to what they say!

First I would get underneath and look for any rust working its way from the inside out. That would ruin a paint job.

Thats just a sand, metal prep (rust proof) and paint... Take it apart as much as you can to paint the parts seperately. Hood, fenders, bib, aprons, doors, top. Make sure you get the undercoating steam cleaned and re-apply undercoating. Steam cleaning is the BEES KNEES... If its a true steam clean, you can get the undercarriage superclean and ready for undercoating in no time. Steam can take off paint, so be carefull.

That is a good truck to repaint and it would look like new with a moderate effort.. I don't understand the attraction of the rust for some but when they look pristine that is something else.
Here are a couple of pics of a mates cruiser in my back yard. He cleaned this one up and put a 5 speed in it. MHO It looks a sweet ride compared to the way it looked previous.

I think I would clear off that window tint that looks to be peeling,[must be hard to see through] especially at night time. It depends on your budget and priorities what you tackle first. I would consider removing the interior, door trims etc and clean it up inside and paint there first. Use a good rust proofing material and repaint with the original colour. Do you need to spray some test panels before attempting to spray the exterior. Get a couple of old fenders or hoods and get your technique correct and gun settings right.
