My local Discount Tire can't seem to find 15" wheels that clear the calipers on my '84 60. I'm pretty sure the calipers are original as the PO only changed R&Ps, added a leaf & extended shackles, and ran 33X12.5s on 15X10 wheels. But I haven't pulled off a front wheel to compare it to my '83 60.

The Discount manager said he'll get to the bottom of this & wanted to know if I would accept 16" wheels. I told him I preferred steel unless they're OEM Toyota. From other threads I understand that 80 wheels won't fit without spacers, which Discount won't do.

What about more recent Cruisers like the 100s?

I have had many sets of wheels for my stable of 60's and haven't yet found a 15" wheel that didn't clear the calipers. I have seen some 88+ Chevy pick up wheels, that although they are the same bolt pattern, the offset is too negative to clear, but knowing that I always stayed away from them. If you look at anything around 3.5" of backspacing, you should have no problems. I have 15x10s on 2 60s with 3.5 and they both clear perfect with no spacers.

How picky are ya and where are ya located? I got a set of DECENT black 158 wagon wheels that are on my 60 now that i am replacing with alloys in a week or so. if your interested drop me a line

Why don't you just order the OEM from Toyota? I have a set of 16s that I'm running 255/85R/16 with (33.3" diameter, 10" footprint). I can get you a part# tomorrow if you're interested...I don't think they're that expensive either.

I was recently looking for new 15x8" wheels with 3.5 inch backspacing. I get the impression that some of the availabe styles, like Rock Crawler from 4wheelparts, don't fit (anymore). I think the holes in the rim are stamped and bend inward, touching the caliper. I couldn't find any local tire guy that could/would find some they would stand behind (in terms of fit). You can buy "custom" wheels from US Wheel (via summit racing) but they come unpainted. I bought wheels from FJ60.com. They are different from those shown on his web site. He sold me a set fabricated by MRW. They fit, they work, so I'm happy.

uhhh...Stone, would love to know the part number for the OEM 16" wheel to fit a 60...

Thanks!

I went into American Tire 5 years ago and bought 5 15x8 steel wheels. It did not seem to be a problem. I have had no clearance issues and they fit great. I run 32x11.5. I can look up the wheels if you want. I still have the receipt somewhere.

Do the wheels hit the caliper if you try and put them on or is it very subtle in touching the caliper?

Just grind the calipers down a little. It doesn't take a lot to get them to clear. Maybe 1/32-1/16" over an 1-1/2x1/4" area. Whoopty-do

If you're looking for one that has a 3.50" backspacing or so, then the OEM ones that I have now should fit. I'll get it tomorrow...unless someone beats me to it first.

Stone, doesn't your 74 have a different front axle than a 60? I thought 70's had 8" fronts, the front hubs on 8" axles will take a 3.75 BS but 60 axles need 3.5 or less.

No, Stones BJ74 (as well as mine) have the larger front axle...nicely gusseted from the factory. I believe it was 1991 and newer that 70 series that went with the reverse cut 8" ala 80 series and mini truck.

3.75" BS works fine in 16" configuration, as does 4" BS ala the Unique 21-7760 (White 16x7 with 4" BS). They clear the TRE's just fine. I ran some Unique's for a number of years on my BJ42.

Of course you do lose a little width. You can custom order the rims from Unique with shallower BS. 3.25" is a far in as they can push them with the current inners.

My current OEM 16" steel wheels that I'm running on my BJ74 came from an HJ61, and they are backspaced at 3.75" and the part number per Greg's post...if that helps.

Yes, this is true re: the 4wheelparts Rock Crawlers. But, they will fit nicely if you use 1/4" spacers. Or you could just grind down the calipers a bit to make the fit. Spacers are less traumatic though ;)

Got New Wheels!

Third time is a charm! Discount came up with these Unique 251-5860s with the fake beadlocks (which I could do without) for $106 each. More than I wanted to spend, but they fit & are steel, which is all I wanted. They threw in chrome valve stem covers, center caps/sleeves, & siped my MTRs for my trouble (IMO MTRs big mistake if you live in real snow country).
