If you have the original OEM starter from PO, tear it down and inspect. It may be worth giving it a refresh and put it back in.
All the small parts aren't expensive if you shop around a little

I do have the starter that came out of it. I don't know if its an OEM one. But I will def have to tear it down and see.

I had an old 91 Toy pickup that started doing a similar thing as it got older. I threw multiple starters on it as had a lifetime warranty from a common parts store and they kept replacing it. It helped almost everytime when they were brand new but finally got worse to where I knew it was not the real issue. Try taking a hot wire from the battery to where the positive activates the Solenoid. If it makes it start normal you probably have am ignition switch going out. I ran a extra lead from that terminal I left next to the battery that I could go out and touch to the positive to get it to start as I barely used the truck until I got rid of it and it was somewhat erratic.

If you are building a christmas wishlist: the the starter found on the 1993 FZJ80 w/1FZFE had starters rated at 2.2 KW for cold weather which is the king.

That starter is NLA, but can be found only on some unmolested 1993 trucks or second market. maybe keep an eye out for one and take on rebuild? 12V 2.2KW, part # 28100-66050. The Denso 2.0 is equally good found on rock auto

You may want to check the voltage on the wire to the starter. Volt meter, set it on DC, black to battery neg-term, red in the small wire that you unplug from the starter. Turn the key to start it and you should see 12v or just over. Anything less means wire or relay or both. If it's 12v you have starter issue. To test this just unplug the small wire from starter and try and turn it over, it won't do it.

I replaced my starter with new OEM, still was an issue. Check this thread out. Its not the starter.

Fusible link solved my issue. I also made my own bypass switch in the event the issue cropped up again. Bottom line, your not getting all the 12VDC at the starter solenoid. That 12 VDC has a long journey from the switch... turns out it loses some "Umpff" on the way to the starter.

On my '97 FJ80 the PO's shop hacked up the fusible link. I just ordered 2 and a new female side of the plug as well. My truck starts, it chugs about 8 times before it fires up. Checked wires and grounds, battery is new, starter is ... aftermarket, probably AutoZone. I am going to switch out the fusible link today and see if it makes a difference. Would appreciate input if you experience long crank times

I replaced the unit with a Pure Energy starter from RAuto. I opted for the 2.2kw option . And it is working perfectly.
There has been a question about getting 2.2kw starters , and for what it's worth the motor portion of the unit is much larger than the one I took out.
So is it "actually" a 2.2kw ?? The world will never know hahaha. But it fits and works great.

The solenoid on my 96 is getting buggy. It occasionally will pause and then start. I've been ignoring it for a while, but I had my first full-on no start situation last week. It was a hot day, and it was heat soaked from a long drive. I hosed the whole thing with contact cleaner (not for the designated purpose, but for the evaporative cooling), and it fired right up, but I figured it was probably time to deal with it.

Since I know there was a 2.2kw option, I thought I might see if I could find one. Since RockAuto shows the Pure Energy rebuilt 2.2kw, I figured I'd try it, tear it down for a thorough inspection and re-rebuild if necessary (the parts still seem to be available). Well, the website says it's the 2.2kw starter, but it appears to be the 2.0, and NOT the 2.2 version. I looked carefully at that picture that someone here took forever ago, and there's no real question. What they sent me is physically the same size as my existing 2.0 unit, doesn't have that nose on the shaft and the gear has ten teeth.

Look, I'm sure the 2.0 is fine, but I was hoping to get my hands on the larger one, and I'm aggravated at RockAuto for falsely labeling it as what it isn't. I'm probably going to send it back on principle, simply because they didn't send me what I ordered. So, does anyone have a source for a rebuildable core, or is it just a matter of stumbling on one in a junkyard?
