My sister lost the engine in her truck tonight, I am not sure what exactly is wrong other then everything is covered in oil under the hood. She has been thinking about getting a new truck for a while now so I dought she will be fixing it. I am trying to find the vaule of the truck in it's current condition for her to sale it.

1989 ex-cab 4cyl 5spd 220,000 miles has a little surface rust on the tailgate but no cancer. Has header, cold air intake, electric fan Shell and carpet kit (not pictured) The truck is located in Salt lake city What is it worth with a dead engine?

Being a 4cyl 5spd pickup is definitely a plus. I'd say closer to $800-$900.

If the body is as straight as you are saying call a body shop. When the ranger in my sig line died I got $500 for it from a body shop. You might be able to get more since your sister's is a toyota. Or throw it on craigslist for a grand and see what happens.

Shoot for 500, but start high, and expect to haggle down.

If you parted it out, maybe 1000.

why not fix it and get 1500-2500 out of it?

otherwise 500-800

I'd start at 1K and see what happens. Those engines are fairly cheap to replace and sell alot easier than the 3.0's.

I've bought several trucks like that, spent 1k on the truck, 1k on a re-manned long block from a place out of Dallas. Then sold them for around 3500.00.:D

that's bank. For that kinda money, you could pick up a donor, and gain the advantage of a truckload of spares.

Did you figure out what's wrong with the old engine? It might be something very simple.

Engine covered in oil doens't sound that bad, actually. Could be a leaky valve cover gasket, main seal, or dead PCV valve.

It's easy to check for these issues, too:

Valve Cover: just run it with the hood open and a full pan of oil, look for dribbling around the gasket.

PCV: get her idling, and pull the PCV valve hose off, Engine should die immediately from the vaccum leak. If the valve is plugged, or dead, it'll still idle, and it will burp oil and air out of the valve cover breathers from back pressure.

Main seal: oil will spray out from the front or rear of the lower part of the block depending on which seal is shot. Look for oil pooling either on the pulleys, frame, water pump and radiator, or bellhousing, clutch, header.

Everything in the oiling system is closed off internally, so anything serious would be inside the block and head, not outside.

Worst-case scenario is a few hours shop time and maybe a 60-dollar gasket of some sort.

I'm betting on a main, I test-drove a first-gen with a shot front main seal; that's the one time in my life when I saw a block literally "covered" in oil.

It could also be something as simple as the 710 fill plug fell out, or someone left it off. I have seen that, it makes a huge mess.

I was going to say the same thing. A friend of mine took his truck to have the oil changed and they left the dip stick out just enough to spew oil every where. You don't mention if it still runs, knocks or makes any noise. I would investigate further before investing any $ in a mechanic. Too bad she isn't closer because I'd give her 500 bux for it. Older trucks are hard to come by in our neighborhood that aren't beat to crap and people want an a$$ load of money for them.
There are 2 in S. Tx with blown engines and the same mileage but much worse condition and they are asking about a grand ea.

A running Ex cab 4WD 22RE here is about 6 grand...

Ppl around here are still asking 4 to 4800 for their regular cabs... And off-the-cuff an ex cab is worth a thou more, easy.

I'da dropped 1 to 2 on it in a heartbeat but b/c I would love a 22RE 4WD and I have a bunch of 22RE engine parts... And would do my own work.

That WAS a big money truck, and she will be trading down unless she gets another one just like it...

But considering how cheap you can buy a(ny) 85-95 block and just do an engine swap, there is no way you'd make out on that short sale.
