What happened to your driveshaft?

Factory defect. They have since been upgraded but my truck is to far out of warranty to have it replaced. It vibrates like crazy between 35-50 mph when not accelerating. If I push down on the gas it stops. It feels sort of like bucking a standard transmission. It seems to be getting worse or my tolerance for it is getting less.

Could we pull one from the junk yard?

I noticed an advertisement in Toyota Trails for driveshafts, just need some measurements. But I'd contact the junkyards around you and see of the have a totaled FJ that you could get it from first. There's a big one in Schriever near me I'll call.

I checked around the NOLA area and nobody has an FJ Cruiser listed in their yard. I found some on eBay between $125-$175 but none of them are close and shipping is pretty expensive. My other concern is buying another driveshaft that may have the same problem. I would hate to drop $300 bucks on something that doesn't fix the problem when I could spend $450 and get a new one that has been upgraded. I just don't have the $450 or the $300 at the moment.

No dice at my place either

any chance that the driveshaft is the same length as the one in 4runner? probably a better chance of finding that

I'd just go with a new one when you can, like you said for another 150 you get something better.

Get a custom driveshaft. The one on my gmc was 350 for a steel driveshaft balanced and installed by a shop in slidell

Same Frame, different tcase I believe...

I believe the FJ has an aluminum shaft. I checked with a driveline spot out in Jefferson and they said they don't do aluminum. I'm not sure if I can switch to steel. The last driveshaft I had made they just lengthened the tube and reused the ends. They can't do that if it's aluminum.

Tried to get the driveshaft balanced?

My truck spent a day at Northshore and three at Crane & Template to have the problem investigated if that's what you mean? They both determined that it needed a new driveshaft but that it wouldn't hurt anything to drive it the way it is. It's just a severe aggravation. The u-joints were replaced and they made sure that everything was installed properly but that didn't help. They swapped a new driveshaft on to it at Northshore and it fixed the problem. The Toyota TSB also states that the driveshaft needs to replaced with a corrected unit.

What's corrected about it though?

If you go to a drive shaft place and ask to get the balance checked they should be able to help. Much like a tire, the rotational weight has to be perfect or else it shakes and vibrates like a seizing jackhammer.

I don't know what's corrected about it. Toyota didn't consult with me directly when they determined that they had a problem and decided to do something about it. I only know that they issued a TSB to replace the rear propeller shafts on 07-12 4wd AT FJ Cruisers due to a thunking noise and vibrating at stop and take off which I am also experiencing. Regarding balancing the driveshaft, Northshore Toyota said it needs to be replaced. I got a second opinion from Crane and Template and according to them the driveshaft would not balance and needs to be replaced. I am not a Toyota tech so unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to figure their engineering snafus out on my own. That leaves me at the mercy of relying on people that have more knowledge than I do. I guess I could get a third opinion from the driveline shop I use but they already told me they couldn't help with aluminum driveshafts. I was dealing with Charles over at Northshore so I would think that if there was an easy solution like just having it balanced he would not have kept that information from me. If you have a good recommendation of someone who can fix my problem for cheap I am all ears. I would love for it to be as easy as you make it sound.

If they said it couldn't be balanced then your best bet would be to price shops who can buy/build you one and compare prices. Replacing the driveshaft is easy peasy as long as you have acces to a press for the u-joints. Google driveshaft shops near me and see what you get

I've got a great price on a new one, $445, but it's still $445 that I don't currently have. I'm not sure about a rebuild price.

One of the best mods so far. Also working on adding two 12v outlets in the back of the FJ. Also looking at adding a 300w inverter in the same location.

the two 12v outlets are installed just not wired up yet. Will work on that tonight as I work on getting the trailer hooked up for the parade.

Thanks for the info and recommendations Bart and Erick.

I hope you get it figured out cheaper than that!
