I knew DDing my 60 would catch up to me at some point... on the drive home tonight my stock 4 speed started getting worse and worse. It went from a loud whirling ( its steadily been getting louder for months) to clunking now which I believe is a sign that its on it last legs. I knew it was coming so its not a huge deal....

Anyway the real question here is what to do now? I was planning on buying a commuter car so DD wont be an issue anymore. What do ya think? 700r4, TH400, TH350, SM420, stock 4? This is going behind my 95 TBI 5.7 and in front of my 2.28 toybox and split Xfer case. Opinions? Advantages? Disadvantages?

trail rig . ?

I have to options in mind .. auto or manual you choose.

Auto: TH400 ( I love this tranny .. behind a V8 )

Manual: SM465 ! bulletproof !

yep... big blue is offically going to be pulled off the road for highway use (except to and from the trail). I'm really leaning towards a th350, 2.28 toybox, 2.28 splitcase. With the 4.56s that would bring the crawl ratio to 60:1 which seems reasonable given the auto..

Also going SOA while blue is down. :)

did you prefeer TH350 more than TH400 ?

since I dont have over built 5.7V8 I dont think I really need the th400 not to mention the th400 can rob up to as much as 40hp. From what most people say a properly cooled and set up th350 will handle up to 500hp which I'm not even close or will be in the near future.

I talked to the guys at Marlin today... an auto will work pretty easily with just and Advanced Adaptor on the front side of the toybox. Now its just a decision of auto or manual...

better gearing (low is 3.01:1, plus the 30% overdrive)
lockup converter so you get better mph on the freeway
runs cooler since the converter produces the most heat in any trans. when it's in lockup mode there's no slippage so no heat

same length and weight as the th400 and plenty strong

i convinced woody to put one in his buggy and he loves it. isotel has one i had built, i run one, greenfox is putting one in his 45, .............

that's a loaded question. if you're gonna run an adapter and a different t-case or toybox behind it then your chances of having to replace the transmission output shaft are pretty high. that means having to completely dis-assemble the trans to do so. normally the best idea in that case is to find a good core and have it rebuilt. at the same time you'd install the new shaft. i have done this for a few mud members.

In the rebuild process maybe include a nice trans pack .. and not all TH400 are R4 .. they start at R1 - R2 .. to R4 the last release with more problems fixed .. at I underestand.

well,...... actually the th700-4r (that was it's original designation) has gone thru 9 major design changes if you count the electronic versions starting in 93.
the best years for the non-computer controlled 700 were late 87 thru 92, also known as the "auxillary valve body th700 or the 4L60". they have all the factory gm updates and hold up really well.

i spent 12 years of my professional life in the transmission industry, running a business and then in parts sales. a little bit of info finally rubbed off so if you have any questions about autos, don't hesitate to hit me up. i can get you damn good pricing on parts to rebuild them as well, even though i do not work in that field anymore. finally had enough of corporate america.........now i'm my own boss.;)

hey dude .. pretty nice info .. and thanks for sharing .. !

Almost 100% on the th350 or 700r4 but is the output shaft on the h41 a 19 spline?

Nap .. in my book only the H42 and H55F are 19 splines .. H41 is 16.
