My oldest son has a scar on his nose from a nip when he was young. Not big, it was a playful nip from a small dog, but it's permanent. A bigger dog with potentially aggressive intent around my kids would make me very nervous.
What to do with this dog?

if I was pretty sure that eventually the dog was going to hurt my kid... I would not wait until I knew for sure
it sucks, and I'd hate to see a good dog put down based solely on my gut feeling, but I'd really hate to have my kids seriously injured by an animal that I knew was a danger to them

Try muzzling him and letting yours kids take the alpha role. If he won't let go of it, lose him.
