The Hankooks are awesome tires. We have sold alot of them and have had alot of luck on with them on 40's and the FJ. For the price you cant go wrong. I have them on my 76 40.

That is a great price on the Hankooks. ^ I thought I was getting a good deal at $158 each at Discount on-line. They want $178 in store which includes the standard warranty. Les Schwab wanted $219 each for them! If anybody is looking for the Hankooks, I’d give Chris a call!

I'm a BFG guy. MTRs and ATRs for me.

Could i get some more info on the Hankooks . When you say a low growl whats a low growl ? I have never owned any kind of tire other than street tires so i need to compare them to the stock tires on a fj if possible. How are they on the road , rain ,mud , rocks , snow ,sand , ice. How about on a scale from 1-5 for each. Are they directional ? And what company do you work for and do you sell wheels ? Thanks for any feed back i can get .

Not sure if it was me you were asking question to...

#1 Low growl? The tires are a radial mud tire, so they are going to be more noisier than the street tire (Bridgestone Dueler HT) that I have seen on most FJ's. They may sing going down the road, but not to the point that it sounds like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is riding with you. :D All mud tires are going to be noisier than street tires whether its Hankook, BFG, GYear MTR or the Cooper. All of which are excellent tires, just alot more $$$ than the Hankook.

#2 How are they on the road. We have sold alot of these tires since the fall and have no problems with them. They are a 8ply tire load range D tire, your oe tires are 4 plys so they will ride rougher (harder).
I have had no complaints about rain traction and as for rock and mud we have several guys that wheeled them at Gray Rock and thought they did great. I can't tell you anything about snow, the last real snow we had was in 2000.
They are not directional.
They are larger and heavier than your oe tire, I suspect this will effect your gas mileage some. I bet other FJ guys could advise you of their mileage.

#3 I own a tire dealership outside Jackson, MS

I like the look of the tire. It has a aggressive tread and sidewall. Our customers have always been attracted to the Cooper, Goodyear and BFG but many couldn't afford them or didn't want to part with that much cash. The Hankook gives them the look they want and the performance they want at a much more agreeable price.
The GYear and BFG MT will probably get more mileage.

#4 We carry many wheels.

PM me if I can help you further.

Thanks,

Chris

I have 285 70 17 BFG A/T KO's. Awesome in the snow/ ice.

I love my Hankooks. Here is a bit of a review from me, these are my first MT tires of any kind so take that into consideration when reading my review, I’m not an expert!

Snow - They are great in the snow. We have had a bit recently so I have a chance to test them out and haven’t had any issues, traction is great. Now on the ice is a different story, but I haven’t ever had a tire that worked on ice unless they were studded.

Wet - Of course I’ve had the chance to play with them in the rain here in Western Washington. They have performed really well. I was expecting a bit of hydroplaning with a mud tire, but haven’t experienced any as of yet and I do like to hit the large puddles every chance I get. :) I did have a set of BFG ATs on my old Ford and they had some hydroplaning issues. I would never get another set of those for daily use here in Washington, I would rather have a MT for off road and if I’m not going to have good wet weather traction, why settle for an AT?

Dry - Dry traction is good, this isn’t a sports car anyways, so I haven’t really pushed the limit, I drive pretty normal, nothing more than 5 mph over at any given time.

Weight - I was told by the guy mounting the tires that they are really heavy and the side walls are super thick. My gas mileage has gone down a bit in the city, it’s not too noticeable on the highway.

Ride Quality - The ride is great for a mud tire, they are a bit stiffer and the FJ does ride noticeably rougher, but not to the point of being annoying and nothing like a strait axle truck or jeep. I think it gives it more of a truck feel rather than an SUV fell so you feel like you are driving a truck and not a RAV-4. It does take a bit to get used to especially when stopping, with the large lugs it felt like I had a brake grabbing at first, and then I realized it’s just the lugs on the tires making it feel like I was in gravel every time I stopped. It still feels that way but I’m used to it now, not sure if I’m describing right but if you know anybody that has MTs for street use, the will tell you this is normal. I had to ask several of my friends to be safe, I even let them drive it just to make sure. It only does this at really slow speeds (<5 mph), you can feel it in stop and go traffic and when creeping up to a stop light or stop sign.

Road Noise - As far as the road noise goes, the do have the growl of a mud tire. Not like a Super Swamper, I've heard several trucks with Swampers driving buy and they are loud, but there is a noticeable growl. With the TRD exhaust on my FJ, the only time I notice the growl is between 25 – 40 mph when I’m not on the gas. Other wise the exhaust note of the TRD and the stereo drowned out the sound pretty well. Any mud tire is going to give you some noise, I would guess the noise of the Hankook is comparable to the BFG MTs or the Goodyear MTRs.

Mud – Sadly I haven’t had them in the mud yet, but I will in the next few weeks and I can get back to you on this. From what I read, others have been very happy with their performance in the mud.

Rocks – We don’t really have rocks here in the North West, at least not that I know of. I guess there are some places over in Eastern Washington with some good rock to play on, but I don’t plan on getting over there any time soon.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

I have Yokohama Geolander AT II on my rig. They have been great, the snow we have had there were no problems with them. Have taken them offroading and they did great!!!

I wanted to keep the same diameter for fender well clearance and to maintain the same speedometer/odometer specs. I purchased TRD 16" wheels (from Matt at TRDSource in Claremont, CA) and had my local tire guy mount Bridgestone 265/75R16 Dueller Revos. The stock Toyota steel wheels are in my garage (Dunlops are on the wife's SUV - prefect fit and she need new tires). The Revos have 1/2 inch more sidewall. Both the stock 17" Dunlops and 16" Revos are built with an O.D. of 31.6 inches. The Revos have a relatively agressive thread that is good in snow and dirt, but run quiet on the open highway. I am extremely happy with this set up.

Hard to beat the Revo's
I have them on my 94 80 and my 05 Suburban.
Great wet traction and a smooth ride, best advice as with any tire...
KEEP THEM ROTATED!!!

I am running Yokohama Geolander M/T+'s (285/75R16). They are fantastic in the snow and sand. I have yet to get them in the mud, but I figure that's what they were made for.

Noise on the highway is minimal and ride is smoooooth!

I second this. I have them on my 06 Prerunner TRD (2wd). I went wheeling with a couple of 4x4 guys and kept up all the way. I tried to do the same with the stock BFG Rugged Trails and was sideways and spinning with the locker on. With the REVOs, the Prerunner is very controlled in the mud and predictable. The clean pretty darn good for an AT and quiet as mice on the HWY. I'm picking up my 07 FJ next weekend and will swap the wheels and tires. I'll be getting bigger tires for the FJ later on as my current setup is 265/70/16 but I'll be getting the same REVOs. If they make the Prerunner so much better offroad and onroad they'll be awesome on the FJ.

Roman

P.s they're also awesome in the snow and on ice!

ok i'm in need of some education and perhaps chris and the rest of you can help me here. i'm a young guy but i remember growing up my dad truck with like 42" super swampers were on somthing like a 14" rim. it seems to me that everybody is running large rims these days, now, i was under the impression that having a smaller rim allwed a large tire to grip rocks better when aired down, my original plan for my FJC was to put some 38"s with like 14" wagonwheels. has conventional wisdom changed?

16" rim is as small as you can go.... you have 4 big disc brakes they need to fit over... but as long as the rims fit the you can go as big as you wont with the tire if you are willing to do the modifications to make it work...

DAMN DISC BRAKES! lol i forgot about them.... almost makes me wanna go to like 2 13" rotors on each wheel. like adouble brake system. anyone ever done this? obviosly a lot of fabrication involved but hell if your gonna build a rig built it right, right?

I'm using the Nitto 295/70r/17 terra grapplers and they are great on and off road. Had to trim the front mounts to fit them.

Due to the off-set of the 17" wheels, the 285s tend to drag on the body mounts. The mounts can be trimmed or you can purchase aftermarket wheels with a different off-set. With that said, some FJ owners claim no problems with the 285s dragging. Roll the dice!
