For all you that like the 60c(s), you may want to take a look at the new "x" series line of GPS. I had a 60cs but sold it because of the limited memory but have since bought a 60csx which has the memory card now versus internal memory. I think right now Garmin says the units will support up to a 512 mb card but will eventually support 1 gig and maybe more. No more limited memory. As far as people looking for GPS units. Get it for what you will use it for. I have had 4-5 units, all have been hand held except one which I sold because I thought that I would like a bigger screen, and I did but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't carry it hiking and such. So I went back to the hand held unit.

I really like the way factory units i've seen from nissan and honda work with respect to maps and highways and adresses. I really only need it for lat and long that are given in the trail books i use so i know where turns and things are, but knowing where i am at any given time on a map and finding adresses is pretty handy.

The Garmin 2610 rocks in my opinion. It talks to ya (many languages :D ) and is touch screen!

Anybody have anything good to say about Magellan?

Never used a Magellan. I have a Street Pilot 2610 it is an upgrade from the Street Pilot III.I like the touch screen and remote control. I just checked out the Garmin 60csx. On Garmin.com looks like a good unit I wish I would of waited one more year to buy a 60CS. ARGH!!

For traveling the Garmin Street pilot is the way to go. Full data base of food, gas, points of interest, streets, and topo maps.

Most units have this also. I think it is the software versus the actual units. If you're traveling I would suggest you getting something with city select or city navigator from Garmin. This software supports auto-routing and has all the exits, food, rest area, addresses, interesections, shopping, etc....

Garmin 276C and love it. It is fast uses USB2 for down/uploads and has a nice screen. Easy to use, etc, etc. Best GPS I have had so far and still uses all the Garmin maps. Problem with a lot fo the raod GPSs are that you can't save multiple routes on it or keep multiple tracklogs to download later.

Thanks for all the replies! Who has the best pricing and Are the plug and play type units (no software needed) the way to go?

Best pricing I've found has been either at costco.com or at gpsnow.com.
Those with no software needed are nice because you won't need to mess with loading the detailed maps. These pre-loaded versions typically have options for more memory as well -- more memory is always a good thing.

Garmin all the way. I have a 2620 from a couple years ago. I'll be upgrading in the near future.

Btw, anybody know where to get Mapsource MetroGuide Maps for cheap, besides eBay. Specifically, I am looking for Australia.

Vultures circling... :D

After my 276C got stolen I had to do the whole GPS research again. I decided to go for the 2630. It's similar in design as the 2610, but much faster and with a better user interface. I also stores tracks better. After spending a whole week in Death Valley, I was able to upload the whole track onto my computer.

The 2630 has XM radio, weather, traffic and stocks. Plus an MP3 and Audible.com player. It comes preloaded (ROM) with the whole of US City V7.0 Select maps. Plus it has 2GB of RAM for additional maps, music or other data (POIs).

I'm really happy with this unit. I was able to install over 1800 POIs (points of interest), mostly hot springs in the US. Plus Topo Maps for everything west of the rockies, from Canada to Mexico. And still have some memory left.

Regards

Alvaro

Let me check with my brother as he mentioned wanting it one time. If he doesn't, then Doug, you have first dibs. But I just looked and it is a Garmin 2610, not the 2620. I think the difference was preloaded maps vs. a compact flash card that stores the maps. CF cards are way cheap nowadays.

The difference is between the 2610 and the 2620 is more than memory. The 2620 is a newer generation device. I shares the same interface as the 2630, plus it has traffic info via FM.

Alvaro

For what it's worth...gpsnow was $100.00 cheaper than REI. I paid $399 for the 60CSx, $159 for the car kit, and $54 for 256MB SD card. Well worth the savings by going with GPSNOW.COM.

Alvaro, there is no 2630. I believe you are referring to the 2720 and 2730 which are both a generation newer than the 2610 and 2620.

Hoser,

Oops, you are right. The 27x0 devices are a newer generation than the 26x0 series devices.

Sorry about the confusion.
