Hey, I'm trying to figure out what the hole in the forward exhaust manifold is on the motor I recently bought. Out of a 1974 FJ40. My best guess is it was tied into the air cleaner to feed hot air to the carb for cold weather? Is it OEM? Anyone?

Yes, OEM. If you have the original air cleaner it should have a pipe off the inlet neck that connects to pull warm air off the manifold. That’s a pretty rare part as most of them are rusted out and ditched.

Very interesting. I am wondering if there was a valve that controlled the intake depending on temp?
There was a flapper type valve with a temp sensitive thingy in the air cleaner intake that directed air flow differently when warm or cold.

On a lady friends helix back in 70's it had a manual sliding selector plate for winter or summer mode. I think it would operate anywhere in between those modes.

I believe it came standard in 75’+ Canada… before that it was optional … I do think it was either 72/73 started but could have been earlier … I’d have to check … mine (upper north east 74’) had this before I went to headers

From what I see on my Toyota microfiche, the part you questioned didn't show up until 01/75 on the 2F engine and doesn't appear to have been used on a '74 engine. Check your engine number to properly date your engine build date. Also you should have a bi-metal coil spring ID'd as 17231b with a valve ID'd as 17231.

Thanks for this!
It's a F.5 engine from what I can tell(relocated engine oil filter) from a 74 but I'll check engine codes. block is 11411-60032

I'm in Canada so this makes sense. I didn't realize it is just a cover over the exhaust to pull heat from the head. I thought it was part of the header but now I know.

My 11/74 F1.5 had it so it must have been earlier than that.

You're looking at the valve in the exhaust manifold under the intake manifold...
