My 40 had been hiding at my parents house for the last 10 years.

We got it started ran some fresh gas through it, put it on trailer and drug it home.

Started to get it cleaned up got all the mouse nests out of the heater and glove box. Also had to let loose a half a can of febreeze for my mechanic. New fluids coming this week and start putting together the todo list.

Here's some mountains a couple hours away from my house.

Enjoyed the pictures, but for mountain neophytes could you explain what a mountain with a doorway is?
Back in the mining days of this area, that was where the explosives were stored.

Pic was taken earlier this year. Southern Sierras around 7,000-8,000 feet.

So, is that just a zinc tank coating or full-on galvanizing ?
Sarge
It's full galvanizing. Dipped into molten zinc (840 degrees F) as one piece. The coating is substantial. The only problem occurs where there are pieces riveted together and the moisture from the wash can't escape fast enough and it causes a blister that pops and makes it a bit rough. I don't see this as much of a problem because I intend to paint it black, but the out side of the frame is smooth and shiny.

BJ40 got a temporary paint on it until i get all the body work done to it.(that might take a while or two!) After that i plan to paint it back to it´s original rustic green color. It´s way easier and cheaper to keep the BJ in one color when i can just use spray can to paint after welding etc. and rustic green wasnt available in those cheap ready made spray cans.
I allso took the doors off, since our weather forecast is looking like summer :clap:
Allso made a "bikini"top for it from tarp that i cut smaller in size and sew straps on it to tighten in place.

Great job, Beejii!!

I spent $105.50 and got my frame back. First I sandblasted it then it got a caustic bath followed by an acid bath. After acid it gets a rinse/flux bath then into the zinc it went. Money well spent, in my mind.

Very well spent. I spent that much on sand and paint. I'd gladly have paid much more to have it galvanized... Acid dipped wasn't even an option.

Beware... welding on zinc releases toxic fumes. (For any readers who weren't aware)

Installed telescoping side mirrors, new hose for snorkel and extended the breather valves from the axles. Getting ready for rainy season in Costa Rica and all the rivers I get to cross.

daBoise and I were pleasantly surprised by a drop in temperatures this past weekend. So, we threw everything we needed into 44 and made another run out to the DNWR. I saw a likely camp spot, in the pinyon and cedar, the last time we were out there.

So, we headed out Morman Well Road, about 30 miles, backed into the trees and pitched our tent (didn't bother with the rain fly) and put up our sun shade.

I brought two bundles of firewood and was gonna tell stories around the campfire, but daBoise begged me to take them to bed at 6:45pm... So, I laid in bed and listened to a Harlon Coben book and stared at the stars, while daBoise curled up under their blankets and slept soundly thru the night.

Damn, it got cold, with no rain fly... it was 31 when we got up the next morning. and daBoise stayed all covered up.

Gunner likes to rest his weary head on Chester... just like he did with Parker before we lost him.

The only problem with that camp location was the lack of good hiking in the vicinity... all we had was the road and these small drainages

So, we packed it all in a drove for a while

..and I spotted this forearm and raised fist, with two fingers raised... also labeled with a number "2"... curious...

We stopped, geared up and hiked 3/4 of the way up a mountain and I noticed Chester had thrown a shoe... we found it at the bottom of the mountain and i noticed later that I actually had a picture of him, sans shoe, and hadn't noticed.

As always, we had a great trip... the weather was wonderful!!

Yeah Danny- looks like you've got your own little chunk of heaven carved out pretty nicely there!

Oh yeah, Pete!! I make the exact same drive and hike, three weeks in a row and see something new, something different every time!!

I do have some other locations/routes mapped out, for day trips, when I get a chance... the DNWR is just so convenient to my house!!
