ive been looking around and cant find a thread on how to find out what gears i have. 79mini axles. are they stamped?

i'm also trying to detemin what gear size my difs. have, I pulled the front driveshaft yesterday and found that they have a red paint code on them , yey there is no red code on the chart , can anyone tell me off hand what ratio my '81 short bed has ?

Are 4:88's the same as 4:87's? :confused::confused:

It's actually 4.875:1, so yes, they're the same.

Some people round up, others round down.

Just like the 79-80 trucks had 4.375:1 gears. Some say 4.37, some say 4.38, both are right.

This may help you out... If you can decipher it...

Toyota Differential Code Decoder - Vehicles with JTxxxxxx... VINs

If you hate reading stuff and like wrenching...pull the driveshaft off the pinion flange and look at what color the pinion nut is painted...Green = 4.37 which is probably what is in your truck if its like my 80.

So with all this gear talk and wisdom being discussed here, can anyone recomend a good place ( preferably online ) that I could purchase a couple of ring and pinion sets along with the necessary install kits?,,, and is this something the average guy can tackel himself ? -I'm not a rocket scientist nor a caveman- but something in between with some mechanical skills.

Randy's is good (ring-pinion.com I think) .
Installing a R&P takes experience and special tools, considering you can trash a lot of $ worth of parts if not done right, it's best left to the pros.

I have welding books and welding DVD's

:frown: don't have a welder.....................

My point? Do some intel get the FAX, its not ez shop press is $200 at HF, definitely multi :banana: looks simple but mucho complicated.

BTW, 4WIW, I have read countless mag's and other sources and 2MK I think they ALL imply you can "set up" the gears without a pinion depth tool or gauge.

This has always been a quandary for me, and if I had the money Summit has one, costs more money than initially thought of but 2MK you will set up the diff THE FIRST TIME right and not have to re shim the pinion if incorrect. And it is reusable, win win to me :)

This is my opinion, 2MK and.........AND the artical I read in P4WOR specifically for IFS Toyota in the pictures, the tools they bought from Randy's R&P where the same one's you get at Harbor Freight ;)

Thnks for the great links, yah , maybe I should yank out the third members and take them to someone, looks like I could probably do this but it's a roll of the dice with what would be a disaster if not done rite.

( don't need the welding books or dvd's - do have a welder though), thanks again.
