My A440F transmission temp light has a habit of turning on while climbing long grades and I was thinking about installing an external transmission cooler to help keep things cool.

Any recommendations?

Many threads posted on this -do a search. 11" x 11" is about the size you want. Your trans. should not be overheating (or turning on the light) except under extreme circumstances. So, get an infrared thermometer, and read the temps on your transmission pan before you declare that it's overheating. I typically see 195-225F.

I ordered a Hayden off of ebay. Or Amazon. Paid Trollholes Cruisers to install. Cant think of the model number offhand.

Used a Hayden purchased on Amazon. Used instructions from a write up on this forum to install.

@SteveH: I searched around a bit but didn't find a specific recommendation. My trans temp light only comes on when I try climbing a particularly steep grade at 55 MPH. The grade in question has you climbing around 3000 feet over the course of 15 miles and unfortunately I didn't have my infrared thermometer with me the last time I drove this route. Does this seem like a reasonable scenario where the stock A440F would overheat?

@89cruiserfj62, @collk22: Thanks! I'll look for a 11" x 11" Hayden.

This is the model I used: Amazon.com: Hayden Automotive 679 Rapid-Cool Plate and Fin Transmission Cooler: Automotive

Can't speak to your situation - I opted to put a cooler on as a preventative measure and haven't had any issues with trans temps (that I know of).

My AT Temp light came of and stays on, even after sitting overnight. FSM doesn't address this. any suggestions?

can also use a a oil cooler off a FJ80 all you need to do is cut your fittings off on your existing lines and make new one so it connects directly to your Tranny. works well i have one on mine and works great.

@redtoy: 5 minutes after I read your message, I started up my rig to run some errands and what do you know? My AT temp light was on despite the fact that it was sitting overnight. No bull****!

I would also like to know if there is a diagnosis for this class of problem...

I use Derale units sourced from Summit. These have AN fittings on them. I made the mounts for them as well.

NCFJ, would you please go into more detail about the coolers (install instructions). I already have a tranny cooler but I'm wanting to go with a set up like what you have in place.

I have never seen any Toyota 'AT over temp' light come on - ever. Without knowing the actual sump temperature, I would not start adding coolers and panicking. Find out if you have a sensor issue, or if you transmission is really hot.

my AT Temp light came on once before, pulled over let it cool and went on.
Mine has remained on even after doing a Rodney Flush and the Party Trick, which worked surprisingly well. The Party Trick must flush out the valve body, as it is shifting very well now. But the stinking light has remained on. Time to get dirty and check some wiring I guess.

Before I could install the Hayden 679, I ran into an issue where my transfer case was leaking. While diagnosing that problem, it turns out that the seal between TC and transmission was compromised, allowing ATF to migrate and essentially fill up the TC.

Took the old girl into LCNW and had them rebuild the transfer case and replace the transmission filter as long as they were at it. I haven't legitimately overheated the transmission since then, but I also haven't climbed Hwy 35 yet. I still plan on getting the external cooler installed as it will be cheap insurance against running the transmission too hot in the future.

Thanks. I had the transmission pan dropped and the filter replaced recently but that didn't solve the issue. Looking at the tranny cooler as a next step.

I had LCNW install mine last week and they did great work. It seems to have solved the overheat symptom since she stayed cool on the climb up Mt. Hood. However, I'm not convinced that the transmission is working normally.
