Hi..i have a 2001 50th anniversary amazon which only has a centre diff lock, there is no rear lock,do i have a limited slip diff on the rear or what..will my amazon be any good off road in the mud with only the centre diff lock, seems ok at the moment but would like your views before i get to confident and end up stuck in the thick stuff...:whoops:..thanks.
He's joking. Take into mud and then give your least tolerable child the task of washing the underside.
I too am learning the locks, as mine has all 3. On my 100 the center lock gives greater capability in slippery conditions. The 80 was in slippery mud this week and I still was slipping all over the place, with the center locked. Proper tires are a big upgrade in slippery conditions, from my experience.
The center diff lock locks the center differential. This distributes power equally to the front and rear diffs.
Lockers front and rear would help in the mud and there are some conversions (ARB for example) that can change diffs to lockers. The rear diff is open; don't believe it's limited. In mud it probably depends just as much from tires as anything. Bring a tow strap.
Ok thought i was an open diff at the rear and was not to sure what the center locked, wonder why i only got centre lock..got some bf goodrich muds tyres on and about to change to a OME 860 spring/shocker kit as my rear spheres have gone flat and i am not willing to pay thousands keeping my AHC working into the future.
ATRAC hasn't failed me yet but it would be my preference to have lockers. And Oregon is right. The 98 and 99 year had rear locker (only) as an option. Although, I'm not sure this option was available all across the country for Lexus vehicles after '97
Ok i now under stand whats what...might need to start another topic but if i scrap my AHC for ome springs etc will my ABS,ATRAC etc be troubled by this and stop working.

Nice thing about ATRAC is that you can still steer. I'm not a hardcore crawler, but from what I read a solid setup is mechanical locker in rear + ATRAC for front control.
Center Diff Lock Disengaged=All Wheel Drive
Center Diff Lock Engaged=Four Wheel Drive
As with any truck just make sure you don't drive on pavement with the diff locked for extended periods. It puts a lot of stress on other drive train parts.
Center diff lock disengaged=1 wheel drive
Center diff lock engaged= 1front and 1 rear wheel drive
LSD will make you freak out for about 9 hours.
Buy a tow strap that is looped at both ends (no built in hooks) and 2 D-rings that are intended for vehicle recovery and a hi-lift jack. These items will get you unstuck 90% of the time. More agressive tires will just get you stuck that much further away from home. IMO

with manual t-case (H-N-L) = 4WD
no manual t-case = AWD
Most vehicles labeled 'AWD' are actually primarily FWD vehicles that have electronic torque distribution to the rear when the computer thinks it's needed. Most 4WD trucks have a 2H-4H-N-4L t-case and operate in 2WD 99% of the time. The Cruiser is unique in that it's full-time 4WD (no 2H without modifications). Some of them have t-cases that lock the center when in 4L rather than have a separate button.
The 4WD in the Pathfinder always bugged me because it was never there when you needed it for everyday driving like turning right into traffic on a wet road. With the Cruiser it's just point, mash, and shoot.

98/99 Lexus LX470s got limited slip instead of a locker. I guess Toyota figured Lexus owners weren't going off road and the limited slip would be better for on road use.
To me the 2000 up is hard to beat. ATRAC for on road since it's automatic then install Lockers and your set for off road. 2000-2002 will take the E-locker in the rear. After that the gears changed with the five speed transmission.
That's right. There was a limited slip for 98-99 LX's. That's why I wasn't sure of my statement that the rear was just an open diff without limited slip.
