Aside from dieseltoys, I have never heard of anyone here doing a 1VDFTV swap stateside. I think diesel toys did two. One in a Tundra and another in a Sequoia.
I would think between sourcing the engine, the proper wiring harnesses and the computers, an installation of that magnitude would not be for the faint-of- heart.
Besides the complexity of the swap, the engine would be too wide for pre-2007 frames. The engine won't fit.

Perhaps it’s a matter of cost or availability with the 1VD-FTV but Diesel Toys seems to now be concentrating on the
1GD-FTV and 1KD-FTV.
They were never able to make the engine conversion work. I saw the Tundra iteration in Seattle a number of years ago and it was a s*** show.
I would assume the number of shops that can pull that off are few and far between. (especially in the U.S.)
Also rumor has it that TMS lawyers sent them a nice letter about that swap.
Vdj78 or Vdj79 are new around 55k $ at the export only dealers in Europe , similar to what a new tacoma costs here in the US . You just get twice the torque and double the mpg
The 1VD is not eligible for import until 2028. That is when EPA compliance requirements drop for first year production.

Oh I 100% agree. But is it a crime if you don't get caught?
The more important question is what happens if you get into an accident with it and the other person's insurance company wants to do an investigation or your insurance company realizes that your VDJ76 doesn't look like a 2021 LC200.

Premise #1 … Insurance companies will often use every loophole available to deny a claim or underpay a claim.
Premise #2 … I’m not a lawyer although I’m old enough to have once watched Perry Mason.
However … On the only local build that I’m aware of (newer Land Cruiser body on older frame) the insurance company required extensive documentation of the build along with numerous photos. On the actual policy, next to where it says Land Cruiser, it also says “CONVERTED”.
Would that hold up in court, I have no idea but in my feeble mind the insurance company is acknowledging that they were aware of what they were insuring.

I was actually kinda surprised at the finish (interior and exterior) of the 2023 VDJ 70 series I saw. It was far from luxurious and was missing a lot of "garnish, as toyota puts it" items that I have on the HZJ77. I mean it was still Toyota quality but it was like they built it knowing it was not intended for civilian use at all.
