Long time coming for an update on the BJ74:
  • Adapted and powdercoated Coastal Offroad's late 70 series front bumper (posting a build thread on this)
    • There's a spot for a winch but I think I'd have to extend the mounting points on the frame a bit to fit one in, for now I just wanted to have the option.
    • Hella 4000 series euro driving lights
  • Kaymar rear bumper modified with some helpful advice from @joekatana.
    • Still waiting for the correct tire carrier plate from long range america (~6 months now...).
    • My exhaust sooted it up a bit but I've since dropped it an inch or two.
    • Haven't decided what to do with the second swingarm - it came with dual tire carriers but that's excessive for me.
  • New shoes (Terra Grappler II 285/75/16)
  • Switched solenoid added to blow-off valve with 12 PSI limit - let's me lock it down and run 15-20 boost if I start to see high EGTs towing or climbing a hill...I was never clear if it was a good idea to run constant high boost so erred a little above stock. I have only seen pre-turbo EGTs above 850 when towing since I started running 12 PSI, my normal is about 400-600*F around town and in the 700 +/-100 range cruising..
  • Never ending list of minor maintenance things

Nice, I am looking at Coastal Off Road bumpers for my BJ73. It looks like yours sticks out further (bigger gap from bottom of grill/fenders) than I would imagine from the pics on their site. Was this an adaptation to be able to fit the Hella lights? Or is this how it sits normally on our BJs?

It has to do with the fender/valance change that happened between the early and late 70 series. My fenders end higher up than the late model fenders. You can see a bit of what I'm talking about here looking at my original bumper compared to the CO bumper. Look at how much more material is on the wide nose 70 series compared to mine on the right.

We also had to modify the mounting points a little so that may have pushed the whole bumper forward a little bit, or the later front body might be a little longer than my early front body...not really sure on that.

Thanks Flynn! I bet my BJ-73's valance/fender design is identical to yours (mine is a 1989 European market). My mounting points are probably the same as well, so I'd probably need to do the same mods.

Looks like Coastal Off-road offers 1 - 2 " body lift versions of all their bumpers... Wondering if that would close the gap. In any case, it looks awesome on your 74, nice work and great upgrade!!

No problem!
I had the guy who welded it up for me keep track of the mods he had to do (sadly welding is not a skill I've had a chance to develop yet) and I'll share them once I get a minute to put the thread together.

Awesome stuff Flynn!
I am looking into an aluminum storage box to mount on my rear's 2nd swing arm.

While not directly 70 Series related I did get to park next to a rare 44 Series at the shop.

Apparently the BJ74 steering tie rod and steering relay rod are both present in some North American warehouse.
I was just notified that mine have shipped from an online dealer.

I asked Coastal about this when I bought the kit and they didn't think it would be a good idea, but it might be worth revisiting with them because I believe I am the first to do this install.

She even makes that smashed quarter panel look good!
