What brake booster is this? & how do I tell a TRD rear from a Fj80 E locker?

Sorry, no pics of the E locker... Got it from a friend with a 80 series Cruiser... He can't use it if it's reg rotation, and I'm gonna give it back if he can...

I thought I read a post on here that said yellow was not the paint code for the 4:10?

It's pretty weird... It's got red marking paint on the gears, is 4:10... And Yellow paint on the pinion...

BTW. 2ndGen... I think we need a paint code link in the FAQ...

How, or which way do I spin it, and which way should the gears be? Are there any other things that are different?

Now this booster...

It's bigger in diameter than my 84 and two RTE's...

But what catches my eye is... Is this an adapter?

What the heck is this thing?

Get an approximate measurement of the ring gear.....
Pink should be the pinion paint code for a 4.10 set.
Yellow should be 4.56 ....... did you count the ring gear teeth and pinion teeth then divide?
Stolen from here.....

I don't know anything about your MC. :flipoff2:

What's the bore say on the side of the mastercylinder?
Maybe larger vacuum booster prior to dual diaphram?

alright... ring's not gonna matter... TRD's an 8", so is an Fj80 front...

2nd thing is, it's 40x 10, or 41x 10... It's a 4:10!

Factory 80 is... 4:10? 4:11?

And the marking paint on the ring is faint... There's no way that stuff would stay on for some miles, right?

damn me for trying not to make the title too long!!! :D

It's either a Fj80 front, or TRD rear... And I can't tell...

You said nothing about front, smartass. :flipoff2:

Count again.....just to be sure, since you are not sure.

I've never seen anything about ring gear paint corresponding to gear ratio.
BTW, my buddies taco rear had all the factory marks still on it at 165,000 miles.

[STRIKE]Shouldn't you be able to turn the damn pinion and find out which way you would be driving?[/STRIKE]

For god's sake, is it high pinion? There is your answer.

stop making me laugh! I cant ttttype!

as long as I hold it up-side-down, yes!

They're the same, man... Pretty sure the same casting, only the R&P is backards...

Don't make me ask YotaTech! They'rd be 60 posts telling me to put new axle seals in and use a new gasket if I ever put it in...

nothing about how to tell the rotation though....

All 80 series Hi pinions are reverse cut gears... They still turn the right way... That means that then run on the drive side of the gears, not like an 8" mini diff, which is running on the coast side of the gears when it's in the front axle.

ok, the shaft turns right, right?

So if I stand at the front of the pinon, and rotate it to the right, what should I be looking for?

It's harder than I thought... trying to find the coast side... The teeth are more straight and run at a diagonal, rather than curved like I imagined...

How about you post a pick of what you're looking at and we'll tell you what it is...? "Reverse cut" doesn't mean it's doing anything that any other Toyota diff is... if you turn the pinion to the right the top of the ring gear should turn towards you... but all Toyota diffs will...

The reverse cut gears just mean they look like this |\_|\_|\ instead of this: /|_/|_/| the diffs still act the same...

Ray, it is my understanding that both castings for both 8" diffs are the same... So there's no visual que that I can use to determine. EDIT: THIS IS WRONG!!!!

2nd, Evey thing is the same, ex how the teeth contact the pinion.

So I can bolt it into a truck, and if it's reverse rotation, it will still drive... and fwd... BUT the teeth will engage differently.

no wait... that cant be right...

Does the front shaft turn left?

I see it now, Ray... this threw me... :flipoff2:

It's up-side-down!

If I'm looking at it right, mine looks like the Taco diff... SWEET!

Now that I get a TRD, Downy goes out of business :bang:
