what am I doing wrong

ok, i purchased a new used engine, heard it run on starter fluid did the swap ,stabbed the distributer correctly tdc rotor pointed at four, valves 123 are closed but when i start it i cant see the tdc line or the bb. carburetor coughs like its too advanced but when i retard it, it wont run and wont accelerate. my forty has a holley sniper with none of these issues . what am I doing wrong

87 fj60 -- pulled the distributor out to replace with a new jim c. rebuilt one -- if i insstall the new one wrong will the truck still start - all i have done is pulled the old one out --

Glad you got it fixed!

I would do a valve adjustment once you get it running good, check also vacuum readings at idle to see if any issues.
How about oil galley plug?
