Damn!! My wife and I went mountain biking for the first time on an ORV trail on saturday. Very fun and what a work out. My legs felt like jello. The first part of the ride was all up hill and it was pretty slow going while I tried to control my breathing and proper pedaling at the same time. Coming down was just as strenuous. I had a hold of the breaks trying not to biff it on a loose rock. Both our rims were hot from braking (is that why they switched to disc brakes?) and my brakes felt mushy at the bottom. My shoulders are a little sore.

Anyway, very fun and I can't wait to go again.

I should have taken pictures :(

I am all signed up. Thanks Fast Eddy. I am planning on picking up a new bike next spring. It will have a front shock, hydro disc brakes, clip in pedals and a better shaped seat (ouch).

I'm a fat guy and I approve this message.

Just spend a bit of time over on MTBR and it will be more like, "I can't wait until I have enough saved up for my (Turner, Ibis, Titus, Santa Cruz, other name)."

Get ready to loose some skin while you learn to get comfortable with the clips. Once you get used to them they are great. A suspension seat post will help with the grundle pain.

Uh oh. I have an Ibis, a Titus and a Phil Wood singlespeed. Maybe I've been hanging around there too much, eh? You can't really tell from the picture, but that's an MTBR jersey and shorts too. The photo was actually taken by Francis, the founder of MTBR.

Disc brakes are better in every aspect: power, feel, fade, adverse conditions (ie wet), pad life, shape of rim does not matter...

Except weight...last time I looked all disc setups still weighed more than a similar v-brake setup...that said, I hate my v-brakes.. :D

This one favorite trail ride we do (Indian Creek) has a section of a few miles which is pretty darn technical, steep and alot of rocks and switchbacks and such...so alot of 'oh crap slow down NOW'...which translates to rims too hot to touch, brakes that when pulled as hard as possible with my cramping hands I can't even get anywhere near as much braking power as I want, fingers shaking the muscles are so shot, etc...

Mtn biking is great!

To funny, we have a similar stable. I have a Ibis Cousin It, Titus Riddler, Titus Drop-U, and Turner Burner. I also have the identical MTBR jersey from about 2000.

The new discs are very close. The lightest discs are about 320 grams per end, v-brakes run about 300 grams per end.

Check out Kona's. They'd be the most local for WA.

I have a Trek 930 now and I will probly go with another Trek from the local store. My wife also has a Trek. This was its first outing and it was perfect for her.

I talked to a guy at work today who goes mountain biking also. He says that he will show us some good beginer trails so we can learn.

FWIW - I never thought that it would be so fun. I used to think who the hell would like to ride a bike up a hill and waste all that energy. Now I see why.:bounce:

I've got the old one too...

My Ibis is a Sonoma road bike converted to fixed gear, my Titus is a Moto Lite that I took for a nice night ride last night, possibly motivated, in part, by this thread. :)

I need to dust off the old crappindale delta-v.
Used to ride a bunch before I sat in a kayak
