Hi All,
Yesterday i had some weird AC issues to the point where it stopped working and i wanted to see if anyone has any ideas as to why this happened.
Some context:
I bought my 2000 LX470 in 11/22 and the AC was not working, I gave it to a shop in 11/24 and they deleted the rear AC and recharged the system and it worked beautifully. the work was done in the midwest (about 2 hours south of chicago). I then drove the car to the west coast where i used the AC every day for about 8 months. During my time on the west cost i noticed small amounts of die on the bottom of the condenser. I knew that it would have to be addressed at sometime and hoped that i could have the AC last until the summer months ended.
Where my issues started to arise.
Upon driving back to the midwest in 8/25 I started to notice that there was some mist or fog coming from the vents. I pulled over immediately thinking i was overheating however there was no coolant/oil smell or drips. I assumed that this was due to the extreme humidity and heat and it was normal for the AC to do this (it was like 96ºF and 92% humidity that day). This only happened i left the recirculate off. When i parked the car that day there had to have been a gallon of water that came out of the AC drain. Once again i assumed this was normal due to the extreme heat and humidity that day.
Ive attached a picture below of the mist/fog coming from the vents
When i continued to use the AC after this day i noticed a mildew-ey smell for the first couple of minutes as if there was some water in the system that didnt drain properly.
When the AC stopped working:
Yesterday I drove to OH and the AC started to mist/fog and i just thought this was normal as it wasnt the first time this happened. However i noticed that the passenger vents were not cold and the driver side vents were not as cold as they used to be. I switched it to recirculate and it got a bit better for the vents on the driver side however the passenger side vents were warm. After a couple hours on the road i noticed that my the air on the driver side started to warm up to the same temperature as the passenger side.
Resolution?
Im assuming that i will need to fix the leak on the condenser and get a recharge however could there be more issues as well? Should i clean out the drain hole for the AC, I know toyota sells a foam kit that you stick up the drain hole. I was also considering sticking some weed wacker wire through the hole to dislodge any debris. Is it possible that the receiver-drier isnt working properly and i didnt notice any issues before because i was using the AC on the west coast with little to no humidity ?
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be causing this issue?
Thanks in advance
