Had my windshield replaced recently and unfortunately did not consult here first. They used screws instead of rivets. Overall it seems ok but when driving at high speeds in the rain, I can hear a water trickling sound coming from what I think is the sun visor area. The noise is only present during mid/heavy rain at freeway speeds.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening? Is water getting past some seal and is there potential for long term damage/rust?

TIA

No one here can know what's going on without digging into your windshield in person.

You already stated it wasn't installed the way toyota recommends. I'd get it to a shop that knows how to properly install these windshields for an assessment.

Or run the very real risk that your a pillars will rust and you're leaking water into your cab and possibly into your fuse boxes and electrical components.

Could it be fine? Sure. Just depends on how much you like to gamble. Ha

Spray something soapy along the outside perimeter of the windshield and then blow compressed air along that edge from inside the vehicle, see if you get bubbles. Also probably should check your sunroof drains if you never have. And, maybe check that they used all the trim pieces they were supposed to, if they used screws not rivets maybe they left something off.

Fair enough sounds like its worth taking it to another shop. I called the windshield place I took it to and they tried to tell me it was my sunroof drains and that my coolant was low, stuff that google gives you but those are not the issue.

Anyone know a decent windshield place in Portland OR or SW Washington?

Hello Superflo,
Was your repair done through your insurance company?
If so, I'd call them 1st and explain the situation.
They should be able to give you a list of local shops to call that would do the work via your insurance, or force the 1st shop to fix the problem..

Either through your insurance company or not, I'd get a list of windshield places near you, then I'd call 3 or 4 of them.
Ask them if you can have a discussion with the experienced tech that would be assigned to do your windshield.
When I went through this process, they let me chat with the tech, and I asked what parts I needed to supply and what parts they would supply.
I also asked about screws vs rivets, knowing that any place that said they would use screws would be eliminated from my list.
Mine was going through my insurance company and I gave the tech the list of parts that I felt would need replaced.
They then called the insurance company and it took a couple of weeks to get the additional parts approved (like the 2 trim strips...).
The 2 trim strips that run up each side that should be installed with rivets are often damaged during removal.
Mine had already been replaced once and the 1st time it was replaced they used screws, not rivets.
After mine was removed, I had a body shop clean up any surface rust and elongated holes.
Once the opening was prepped, I had them come and do the install.
Hopefully a majority of your install was done correctly and the 2nd company won't have to completely remove it to fix the problem(s).

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. It was done through insurance (state farm). I'll try giving them a call and getting a list of local shops. I'll also try going back to the shop and explaining it to them. When I called them they tried to blame it on other things and said if there was no water leaking into the cabin then everything is fine. If you happen to have a parts list from when you did yours could you DM it to me? Much appreciated.

Hello Superflo,

Here's what I sent to the windshield tech:
75534-60021 Molding, Windshield (LH, Metal and Rubber)
75533-60031 Molding, Windshield (RH, Metal and Rubber)
75531-60030 Molding, Windshield (Top, All Rubber)
(2) 75543-60020 Molding, Windshield (All Rubber, Each Side Requires 1, fits inside 60021 and 60031 and covers the Rivets)
89944-50010 Tape, Rain Sensor
(8) 90269-04053 Rivet (It's good to order a few extra just in case a couple don't come out tight enough and need to be redone)

Note: The windshield tech said they have a non-Toyota replacement for the Top Molding (All Rubber) that he was good with using (OEM Equivalent).

The thread below has some additional part numbers, but the windshield tech indicated the part numbers above was all that he needed.

Note #2: I removed the Driver and Passenger Side Interior Color Pillar Trim Pieces that run up the Sides of the Windshield inside the SUV. Mine had been damaged by the 1st Windshield Replacement (Prior to my Ownership...). I purchased Replacements via eBay (mine are Grey because I have Grey seats / interior) and I installed / reinstalled them after the windshield tech completed the install.

Enjoy.
Tom
