Water pump gaskets

The haynes repair manual recommends a "non-setting sealant for the joint faces". I fues that answers my question. Any other advice or recommendations would be appreciated though.

Thanks

When I replace mine recently, I followed the advice of Mark A (ower of Mark's Offroad) which was the following:

- Unscrew the back plate off the water pump. Apply a small bead of rtv silicon on both sides of the gasket and reattach.

- Between the water pump and block I did not use a gasket. I applied a bead of rtv silicon around the water pump hole and torqued to specifications.

Others may have other suggestions, but this worked for me.

My waterpump was also leaking
I think because an additional paper gasket was fitted on top of the metal one
Should I remove the paper gasket and apply rtv sillicon instead

Both the paper gasket on the block
And the metal plate and the paper gasket in between was fitted. No silicon was used which created a cooling water leak.
It is clear by comments in previous threads that permatex should be applied on the paper and around the opening of the metal plate.
But it is unclear to me if I can neglect the 2nd paper gasket between the metal plate and the block itself.
Many thanks for your help

Once I used hylomer on the paper gasket but it leaked, so next time used permatex water pump sealant on another paper gasket and all faces, it is another silicone, that worked well.

I went back and looked. When I bought a new water pump from "The Guru" (@65swb45) he left me a friendly reminder note. I used Toyota sealant on both sides of both gaskets. No leaks.

Many thanks for your clear answer, I will order two new paper gaskets and will apply permatex in between, very good service of Marks Off Road that was not the case when I bought my pump in EU unfortunately
