Alright, a little more work done on the winch.

Almost finished wire brushing parts, got anxious and decided to paint a little.

Motor housing (I cannot get it cleaner without blasting, no way to blast).

And now another well deserved break, and off to Collowhee tomorrow.

More later.

Alright, I think I am going to like my oldest daughter going to WCU in Cullowhee, beautiful area.

So I did a little more work today on the winch.

Put another couple of coats of primer on and sanded between the gear case top and bottom.
The started sanded again and started shooting some clear coat. Here are some pics with the 1st coat
put on. I will scotch bright and shoot another coat. Still not finished cleaning up all the pieces, but I got tired of wirebrushing and scraping and wanted to finish a few pieces to get a bit more motivation.

Here are a few pics. Guess I will have to go back to wirebrushing :D

And while waiting on a coat to dry, I thought I would start prepping for the top to come off. :)

Ohh yeah, they were a pain to start.

More later, It just occurred to me that it would interesting to see what all projects as a club we have done in the last 90 days. I am betting it is a crap load.

A little update

Alright all - back from Richmond for my middle girls Bday at Kings Dominion and started working on the winch again (A/C is broke, so might as well be in the garage).

Primed a few pieces of the brake and the right side of the winch.

IMG_1331.jpg

Got the drum painted.

IMG_1402.jpg

Motor housing and free spool gear lever. Motor housing did not come out as good
as I would have hoped, it is pitted pretty good..but it will do and looks a lot better.

IMG_1401.jpg

Painted the brake and side of winch. Put a coat of clear on the brake to early for the
black primer...started cracking through the clear, ohh well, feels nice and smooth and I can deal with the look :)

IMG_1403.jpg

IMG_1405.jpg

Painted the solenoid cover with plastic paint.

IMG_1404.jpg

Remote connector housing.

IMG_1411.jpg

Just a little more work, place a wiring/boot order and start bolting her back together.

Hope you guys had a great ride this weekend and sorry I missed it.

Lookin' good Brad.

Hi All,

Alright, almost finished with this extremely long and slow thread, I think next time I do a project, I will just take pictures and document and post all at once to help with some of the pain :D

Ramon & Darin, thanks I am pretty happy with it, and it was a lot of work. I just hope the damn thing still works when I am finished.

Anyway, a little more progress.

Solenoids mounted (best I could get these without blasting and did not feel the need to paint them.

Got the bushing and seal on the drum and greased with a little marine grease.

Well that is it for a few days. I need to get or make up some cables to the motor and I still have not ordered the boots yet :D

Oh well, no more from me for maybe a week.

Brad, that things looks great, and a really nice writeup. Whats everyone think about may a faq/tech question for our forum, I will have to run through some old posts to find them but could be useful.

Hey Brad

Looks great man! I've enjoyed reading the writeup over the past month or so.
Seems like you re-assembled the mounting holes out of phase - was that just for support (like a kickstand while on the bench) or are you thinking of mounting it with an L-shaped bracket?

hey - thanks all.

The right side is just sitting this way for support, it rotates on the drum so I can just spin it up when ready.
Going to order some boots/terminal eyes and cable tonight. It will mount on a standard 8274 winch mount bumper once I get one :D

Greg - I think it is a good idea to have a tech/FAQ section.

Noticed that also.

Does look purdy though.

Greg, while i build this 40 i can do a right up on anything someone needs also. Probably still have it in my brain from my 45 also.

That would be great darin, I don't want to duplicate whats in the main faq section but it seems that alot of us have done some unique reapirs and builds.

Greg - I think it is a good idea to have a tech/FAQ section.

As mentioned above I do not want to make duplicate threads in that already exist in the faq sections on the main forum, just maybe the small unique repairs and builds we do. We have a lot of talent among all our members and a lot of knowledge that could benefit everyone is my thinking, and what better than to have a place to reference that.

A little update. Had some honey-do's to take care of most of the day today, got a little done yesterday.

So after fighting to keep the 21 ball bearings in the correct position inside the brake and busting several chunks of my paint off and crushing/beating some more off while trying to get the brake assembled.

Here we go, just a little more to do then I need to find a bumper for the front.

Solenoid pack assembled and newly wired.

IMG_1434.jpg

Left side with brake and brake pawl installed.

IMG_1435.jpg

Front with brake installed (solenoid cover anxiously awaiting to be wired up and installed) :D

IMG_1436.jpg

Hope you guys had a great meeting, sorry I missed it. I should be able to make the trip to Uhwarrie but the bumper/winch will not be finished.
