Warn 8274 Rebuild - Getting started

Hi All,

We now that the clutch job is finished on the 40 , I thought I would start another project. I am going to rebuild (well not really, just clean/inspect, replace as needed and paint) my old Warn 8274.

So for this and the carb rebuild project (Greg I will be calling in the next couple of weeks ) I needed a bench (1 for now and another in the next week or so.

So here are a couple of pics of the bench and the next project.

Its old, but it works.

Anyone have a source for a replacement pull (current one is missing a piece). Does not have to be exact (Warn does not make the round one anymore).

So I started this morning taking pictures and then dis-assembly.

That's all for now, looks like some fresh oil, paint, nuts/bolts and wiring and I should be good to go.

Alright - so I went to the store..well several. Still need to find a few items, like the 6.5 inch bolts that hold the motor to the housing (don't want to keep the original ones as they are flatblade). 2/0 wire, 90 degree boots, connectors for all the wiring, some place to bead blast the case/drum etc.

But I did get some bolts/nuts and wire for the small stuff and started wire brushing some things.

More later, going to have dinner with the wife tonight. Probably not much more progress for several days until I get it cleaned up and find a place locally to bead blast everything.

This is the type of stuff i like to watch on here.

Its just too easy to go buy a new one or have a shop to rebuild it. Least if you do it yourself you know everything has been gone thru / replaced.

Yeah, in this economy - I am building, cleaning or repairing myself...almost everything

Anyway, a little more progress today.

So I finally got the brake off (what a pain, had to convince it with a little hammering). Went to the store and got some more wire brushes for my drill to try and clean up the case. It is a long process but should clean it up just fine for plastikote cast paint.

Pretty worn out now , saw Joe at the carwash while I was blasting my flywheel cover for the 40...new rear bumper looks great.

Thanks Darin. I am working on but it is kinda slow.

A little more progress, not much. But I did get a little done and ordered some
new allen bolts to get rid of the slotted ones holding the motor to the housing.

Grade 18-8

Got the bottom housing mostly cleaned up, a little more brushing and cleaning and it will be ready.

Ohh and just to mix things up a bit...the next project on my daughters 80 (yep water pump is gone, leaking steadily).

And then back to the 40 for some new kick vent gasket's

Anyway, enough for tonight...damn I am ready to put some paint on the winch...

Darin - the pump job is finished and took me about 5 hours. Longer that it should I am sure. But so far so good.

Took a break today. wife mowed and I ran the weed wacker.

Had some help washing the 40 and the mat.

Did a little wire brushing on the winch motor housing. Had a captain and coke and getting ready to have some burgers and dogs on the grill in a few.

Did you ever find the 90deg boots? I need some for my rebuild as well. I talked to one of the guys at 4WheelParts on Rt 70 and he said he could probably get them, but I haven't called him back yet.

Hi All,

winch as been delayed for a few reasons had some maintenance work...at work Saturday, the starter on my 40 died after 31 years and just a little water

I replaced my starter with a GR for a 87 FJ60, damn that thing really spins. Anyway, today I have to ride to Danville VA to pick up one of my daughters, but I should be able to brush a little more later today.

Darin, hell yeah we can take a ride. I need to get a new rear tire here in the next couple of weeks, then I will be ready. Did a cross country loop in Aug. that ate the tire up.

Sean, I have not looked very hard yet for the boots, but I will let you know what I find. I am going to be using 2/0 cable for everything, so they need to fit the bigger cable.
