I am in search of an H55F 5 speed transmission (P/N: 33030-60450) to install in a 1984 FJ60. If anyone knows of a good source I would be most appreciative for an introduction or contact information.

Thanks in advance for any help the community can provide.

Great. With Beno you know there will be no surprises.

You realize installing a H55f in an '84 involves a little more work than a post 4/85, yes?

There are threads detailing the process, if you haven't seen them.

Good luck!

Certainly, I currently have a H55F that went south so I am imagining this is merely a swap. I appreciate you looking out for me.

Did it run low on oil? Transfer case oil seal leak? Mine has 230,000 miles on it and its still running fine. Installed it 26 years ago.
To speculate what exactly went wrong is a bit above my pay grade. The information I am currently privy to is that my mechanic found that it was low on fluid and lots of metal in the fluid. Gears and or bearing pieces as it was described to me. I didn't have any fluid leakage prior to or during the incident that left me on the side of the road. It did however burf fluid all over the ground once I hauled it back to home base and got it off the car hauler. Up until that point I wasn't losing fluids. My mechanic speculates that perhaps some foreign matter cut through seals when we backed the vehicle off the hauler thus causing fluid to leak at home base. Again, at this point it is all speculation. I will be happy to report back as to the exact details and causes and as well as any lessons learned from this incident once we have things back to par.

I am happy to hear you have had 26 years on yours. Helps me rest a little better with the 'investment' I am getting ready to make.

A very common issue with all 4WD transmissions is that the output shaft oil seal between the transmission & transfer case leaks. Its not a matter of if it will happen but when. It just wears out.
The oil can migrate either way; sometimes from the transfer up to the transmission, sometimes the other way.

When the oil migrates from the transmission to the transfer, the transmission can get extremely low on oil and the transfer case can get way overfilled.

You wouldn't see any oil dripping on the outside and everything would look fine (on the outside).
But as the transmission is run with insufficient oil for long enough, it begins to overheat parts and grind itself to death. All those little metal particles that grind off due to insufficient oil, mix in with what's left of the oil and create a slurry of abrasive metal particle contaminated oil that grinds up the transmission and oil seals at a faster & faster rate... until the thing bonks.

So although this may not have been the cause of your transmission failure, make a habit of regularly checking the fluid levels on your NEW transmission, so the above scenario never happens.

I appreciate this explanation. This very well may be what happened. This vehicle was fairly new to me and in the name of transparency I did not, nor did anyone else, really examine the transmission or transfer case in the past 6-8 months that it has been on the road.

Live and learn! <smh>

Like @Output Shaft said, you wouldn't have really noticed it unless you decided to change the oil in the Tranny/T-Case and found that one was overly low and one was overfilled. There is a temporary solution in those situations (like mine) where you find it early enough. There is a hose that is sold by a couple different outfits that basically becomes a bridge between the two. As one overfills the excess is pushed through the hose to the other, slightly refilling it. For me I have a more... well... nefarious plan for mine.. :)

I am also looking for a H55f for my 1986 fj60. My h42 need to go, no reverse, and too low for high way use. If any one knows of someone with one for sale please let me know. I am new to this form and I cant find any H55f for sale around me (South Jersey). Thanks

Just whats happening to mine, checked the gearbox oil and was met with a jet of oil coming out of the filler, while the transfer box took a couple of litres to fill. Sadly the transfer box is now sounding a bit rattly so I think it's going to be time for a replacement soon.
